There was a cat here not too long ago that was selling his collection in one lot. Not sure if it ever sold or not but you may want to check the Flea Market.

Dude, that's pretty much gone since a good chunk of it is sitting on the shelves of my library right now.

I must admit I am not buying any CDs - I just like reading all these threads about ditching CD's for flac files and wav crap...

Half.com and Amazon.com are awesome - keep the threads coming baby! :)

Duh. Where do you think the "flac files and wav crap..." come from? Trees?

News flash. A CD is a storage device (very limited storage) for digital files. A CDP is simply a device for playing digital files stored on a CD.

I like reading the threads also. That is how you learn.

Not selling my Cds any time soon. And I continue to buy them cause I have to feed the new tube CDP. Can you say warm and extremely musical...tubey?

I will admit the threads mentioned are interesting but if I had the option between a 1500 dollar CDP (tubes) and a 1000 or so DAC...wait, I think I made that decision already?

    Carry on!

I am in the process of loading my CD's on a external hard drive, with purchasing the W4S DAC 2 I'm looking forward to having my music at the touch of my finger. Not that I am going to get rid of my CD's.. Nothing wrong with having the toys to play what and how you want to play it..

No....In every sense that matters his post is wrong.

    First, CDs ARE compressed.
Second, WAV are an exact 1:1 copy of the CD and are not compressed
Third, FLAC are 'technically' compressed more than a CD, but are still lossless and in every meaningful sense as good as a CD.

What I don't understand is why some people still think compression is bad. It has been shown for years there is no difference between an uncompressed file, and the original file. I suspect they are confusing compression with lossy files removing bits.

Along the same line, I don't understand why some people think a file stored on a CD is different than the same file stored on some other device. It makes no sense.

On a side note, I was researching jitter last week, and there is something called "read jitter" on CD players which results from the laser trying to read the file off the CD. I gather this is minimized, or eliminated, by reading the file off a hard drive. Of course, there is probably some jitter associated with that.

If one can achieve the same exact sound quality why wouldn't one go all digital?

    Main differences:

    1. All Squeezeboxes don't have an internal hard drive; they need a music server (i.e.: a desktop or a laptop). The Squeezebox Touch can accept a USB connected external hard drive, I haven't tried that option yet, but most seems to prefer the music server way.

    2. The ones in the 2 above links can also play video, now that all Squeezeboxes can't.

WAV and FLAC aren't compressed (as in lossy)...........get your learn on, please, before you start making false statements.

I still do but almost exclusively buy used cd's either at a local brick and mortar store or Amazon. At $2-5 a pop you can get some great music for not a lot of coin.

I get them home, rip them to FLAC and add to the digital library. Cd's go on a shelf until furthur notice. Still not willing to pay full price or more for lossless digital downloads.

I've long since tired of paying for a "new" cd. Since prices should have come down years ago.........but that arguement is for another time.

I hear you on that H9 and that looks like a good system. I'll certainly buy some things if they are special, like a MoFi remaster or otherwise similar release for example. Typically it's me picking a couple songs vs an entire album nowadays so the extra cost of lossless downloading isn't a big issue for me personally. Not that it's a big issue with you, you get what I'm saying.

Sure is a good way to go about it. I have been reluctant to go fully digital (music server) as I have been worried about eventually loosing the library (server craps out ). Having the physical media at hand as back-up provides for the confidence of not loosing the entire library. Mark, how do you go about backing-up your music library?
