Broken tweeter Lsi15

Hi,

My left LSi15 lost high pitch sound and found that the tweeter is not working. I interchanged the tweeter from the right speaker and found out that the tweeter is functional. What is my next step?

I am thinking it is the crossover unit that needs replacing. Any way to test this? Any other troubleshooting tips?

If it is the crossover, is there a detailed instruction on how to replace that unit?

Thanks in advance.

bet you it is the resistor in the tweeter circuit (yes, on the crossover). You can solder it back down to the board or replace it. I bet you that is the issue though. (seems to happen in the 15's and the LSiC.)
    Mains.............Polk LSi15 (Cherry)
    Center............Polk LSiC (Crossover upgraded)
Surrounds.......Polk LSi7 (Gloss Black - wood sides removed and crossovers upgraded)
    Subwoofers.....SVS 25-31 CS+ and PC+ (both 20hz tune)
    Pre\Pro...........NAD T163 (Modded with LM4562 opamps)
    Amplifier.........Cinepro 3k6 (6-channel, 500wpc@4ohms)

    BINGO!

My resistor is burnt and CRACKED diagonally.

One more question. Do I need to take the side speaker out to pull the crossover unit out? It is attached at the top part and I don't want to yank it out.

    Thanks a bunch!

What are you using to power them?

    Denon 3805

I have my Lsi15 set up as "large" speaker on the Denon Receiver.

Should I have set them up differently? I have used the same receiver for about five years with this setup (Lsi15, Ls1C, LsiFx). I have set all of them up as "large" speakers.

    Thanks.

    LSi's are 4ohm speakers.

Keep the volume down until you get an amp to properly power your speakers. It's not recommended that you use a receiver them.

    Ordered the crossover.

I was browsing thru the forum.
What do you think about Emotiva XPA-3?

    Thanks.

    There are a few that;
    1. Didn't like the Emotiva+LSi combination
    2. Didn't like Emotiva at all for the price

I have no personal experience with Emotiva so I can't say. When I had my LSi's, they were being powered by a fully modified Moscode 300, and Peachtree Audio Decco and loved every minute of it.

I also cannot comment on the Emo.

What I can tell you is that you want to give them as much wattage as you can get. So with the thought of getting the most wattage for your money, I would go with a older used amp.

Something from Sunfire, Parasound, Adcom, or even Carver.

I have a set of LSi 15's running on a Carver 705x and they sound good to my ears. I live in an apartment so I cant get them to reference levels by any means but they work great.

My upgrade next year will be to a Sunfire Grand Cinema amp (450 wpc x5 @ 4 ohm :eek). When I get that bad boy I shouldnt need to upgrade again lol....

I am very new to this power amp thing. So thanks for all the tips.
If I am looking for 2 or 3 channel amp for about $700-$1000, what would be the best bet?

    Ordered the crossover.

All you need is a $2.00 resistor.

    I know...
My board was charred around the resistor, so I figure I wll replace the whole thing and use power amp in the future to avoid it happening again.

The problem is not the power you are feeding the speakers, it's that the resistor wattage (5 watt) is spec'd too low. Replace them with Mills 12 watt.

    Used.

If you spend $400-$600 on a used 2 channel amp, you could get something pretty killer.... adcom, parasound, carver, B&K - there are a ton of good choices out there....

    ^This

Get a nice used 2 channel amp with as much power as you can afford and sit back and enjoy.

Also think about accoustic treatments if possible. They are a great way to make things sound much better without spending a ton of cash.

I would go for a 3 channel amp & take the bulk of the load off the 3805.

    Aragon 8008x3
    Acurus A200x3
    Adcom GFA-5503
    Parasound HCA-2003
    B&K 4430

I have the Aragon 8008x3 now & it's a fantastic amp. Will drive nearly anything with ease. Heavily biased into class A. Previously I had the Acurus A200x3 & it was no slouch either.

I am replacing the resistor to Mills 12 watt. Someone told me I should replace resistors on BOTH speakers and not just the burnt out one.
If I replace resistor on just one speaker, would that cause a difference in sound reproduction? Or is it that the one with the orginial resistor has higher chance of burning out again?

The one in the other speaker is probably on it's way out too.
