I bought this MX-1000U in 1989, its been packed and moved many times, put in storage a couple of times and recently been run way to hot because I had an AVR sitting on top of it.

Figure its 'bout time for restore/upgrade/tlc if its going to last another 20 years. Does anyone know anything about these guys:

http://legendaryamps.com/restoration.html

or have any advice and/or experience repairing/upgrading Yamaha amps to share?

Thanks

I just had a M-80 (the flagship model a couple years preceding the MX-1000u) restored by those guys at Legendary Amps. They did a great job but with shipping back and forth, the total cost was over $700...ugh!

I am looking to buy a 2nd one and so if either of you are interested in selling yours, shoot me a message. Thanks

I have one and it's working perfectly. It's a really nice cool looking amp in a Knight Rider kind of way. I only use one pair of speakers off mine and have for years.
I would move it if someone wanted it. It doesn't get much use. I'm running a pair of B&W's off it.

    The 1000U is rated at 260wpc @8ohms.

I got a 800U several years ago to power the Martin Logan's, these amps are beasty good. Some of the few amps rated at 1ohm. I hooked up some JBL's and the Logan's one weekend for grins, and it did get a little warm but not to hot to touch when cranked for hours. Nice warm Yammie tone, killer highs.

At that time I really wanted the 1000U, but they were selling for twice what the 800U was, mine is not leaving my house ever, lot's of good techs around the country, nothing unobtainium in there. Info on the 800U, http://www.wired4sound.net.au/amplifiers/yamaha_mx_800/yamaha_mx_800.htm , and a pic or two of mine.

What do you have on those JBLs, stuwee? Do you mount those on you walls? Aren't they a bit big for that?

Love the Knight Rider meters on those Yammies!

Hehe, the JBL's were mounted on the wall at a local radio station, they were on there way to the dumpster with the Teac A-3340 4-channel deck w/ OM/SM in binders, my partner saved them from certain death. Absolutely nothing wrong with them, just made redundant in a station upgrade. Free is very, very good

Humble Pie 'Smokin' is one of my favs, great LP

Sorry no i didn't hear KSHE95 until the mid 80's when I worked at Footlocker in the Northwest plaza. Went back a few years ago to see the old house and Forest park and the Zoo. I would of never thought they would put a roof on the northwest plaza, but they did......

    Yep got to love STL.

My god I loved that station. I was stationed at Scott AFB in the late 60's and K-SHE in Crestwood Mo. was pirate radio back then. They would play entire albums, no commercials, and probably broke 6 to 10 FCC regulations every night. A lot of "illegal smiles" were had by all.

Yep I remember that very well, they had a strong signal too, my little GE radio /cassette deck could pick it up very well, and I recorded many, many Lp's from them, some I still have, the good 'ol days

Steve, we have to meet, I love that 'Sweet Meat' Flag!! I grew up in St. Louis area from the 60's to the early 70's, and K-SHE 95 was the best back then, I'm glad I threw that pic up, it really is a small world full of music lovers.

Would anyone know of a MX-1000U in good condition for sale? I've been looking around with no luck yet. I'm currently using a Yamaha M-80 to drive my B&W 804s but would like to get the MX to drive my DBX Soundfield 1As; or vice-versa. I'm pushing my Denon receiver trying to wake these DBX up; 4 10" woofers, 4 mids, and 6 tweeters in each; and I don't want to put the B&Ws on the receiver. Thanks.

There was a completely rebuilt MX 850 and 1000 on eBay in the last 2 weeks. I'd keep my eyes on that site as there is a guy that brings them back to life with a complete rebuild and much better binding post. Not cheap but built much better than new. Better caps, power supply and all. He's been a yamaha tech for 30+ years

Roger that and thanks pittdogg2. I'll be watching it steady. I'm raking thru the Inet as well but all I see are a lot of fish that got away at this point. I'll keep my eyes peeled and keep checking back here as well. Cheers!

That's because most people who own these don't want to give them up. There's a MX-1000u sitting in my closet and it's probably going to stay there, lol.
