Fill in that blank! I know i'm going to drink lots of beer! But what else is there to do in Heidelberg? Should I be looking for some Audio Gear out there?

    When I came back stateside, speed limits were still 55mph...talk about feeling like you're walking on the highway. It was a painful adjustment.

    You MUST buy a coo-coo clock - enough said. Most places will box it for you or even ship it to you in the US for extra $$$. The ones that are expensive are true works of art, and worth the money.

    I spent 3 months in Germany (for work, non-military). I loved the place. There is so much to see in such short distances. Most are mentioned above. Don't forget that other countries are so close to you and easy to see. Their rail system is very good. Also, Ryan Air is cheap for traveling around Europe. The food is good if you stick to traditional German foods. Their steaks are terrible but brats are wonderful. Driving is fun too.

    Although the Reeperbahn Festival is in September; don't know when/how long you'll be there, but ..... cool tunes. German Frauleins (strictly for admiring purposes), beer, and more beer.

    Was stationed at Bitburg AB for 3 years. BEST time while in the AF. So much to see, people are friendly and it is so clean. The opposite of France.

    If you were going over in July I might have seen you over there! Been almost 20 years since I was there and I have been dying to go back. Well, I'm goin'!

    Don't be afraid to stop at the roadside eateries for food. Often they have great lunches for cheap. Also, most Germans do the grocery store several times a week, and you will find lots of fresh food for picnics in the park.

    If your into shopping, Saturday the stores close early and Sunday most shops are closed. Don't be afraid to ask if someone in the store speaks English (Sprechen Sie English - spreken zee english), if they don't someone in the store usually does.

    Meals are a bit different than perhaps what your used too. Breakfast is usually - breads, jams, fruit and sweet coffee (Lattes and Cappuccino) Lunch is the big meal of the day. 2 hour lunches are not uncommon and don't forget the espresso to give you some pep after the big meal. Dinners are light usually light meats, cheeses and fruit and wine. (Europeans think Americans are a little strange for drinking anything other than espresso after breakfast time.)

    In your travels you will find lots of great beer. While there are national brands you should think of it as Micro brewery. The local, small town gasthouses will only serve one brand of beer and in one section of town you might find 5 or 6 different brands. It should be your mission to sample all you can and find out which one you like best. For your wife, make sure she tries the Weisen (wheat beer). It's traditionally served with a lemon slice floating on top and a few rice kernels at the bottom (the rice makes it effervesce keeping it fresh). The beer will be served warmer than what your used too, but you will be able to taste the beer better at those temperatures.

    Have fun and take lots of pictures.

    NO apologies necessary! The wife is NOT going so I can sample a litlle eye candy without being afraid of getting whacked in the back of the head! It's a 1 week business trip to our sister plant in Heidelberg - so work in the morning and play at night!

    You might consider a side trip to LLorett De Mar, Spain. (Near Barcelona)

    Bring back some tubes! I would happily buy some Telefunken 5965 for a reasonable price and I believe I am not alone.:smile: They don't take much room in a suitcase!

    It seems some very knowledgeable and experienced folks in CP about Germany, so I got a question.

    I think "Frau" means "Miss" and "Fraulein" means more like "Miss Tigress"? :biggrin:

    I think the Germans stop using the word "Frauline" nowadays? But it's more reserved word for the miss tigress you met at pub?


    Juan, if you have time, drop by at the some high end audio shops and take some pictures. They have some of the finest audio toys to offer but don't ask for the prices.

    +1 to take more pictures. Don't show the pictures with you and the Fraulein to your wife if you want to have more home cooked carnitas. :biggrin:
