Give the pic and your story to a local news team on a slow news day. If aired....they will be identified if they are from the general area.

That whole thing just plain sucks. I'd just leave this issue alone and let the Police handle it Scotty. You're going to get worked up everytime you see this post and end up with needless issues on your mind at night. Make peace with it and follow up on the proper channels. It looks like you have the small stuff taken care of....see what you can do in the bigger picture.

This is a dumb advice. First, no local news team will accept this. Hell, if they take such a task, then every hillbillies will drop by the station the next time they got an issue. Second, what the hell are they going to say on air? Uh, the victim found this picture at his home, uh, the people in the picture might be thieves, uh or they might be just innocent people who got their pic stolen from the actual thieves and left at the crime scene, uh, uh, uh, and that's our big story of the day

And the picture could of fallen out of a box of stuff they stole prior to finding your mowers. And how did they find your mowers? If they were in the shed and out of sight did they just happen on them while looking around the property? Most thieves aren't that brave to be just wandering around. Line of sight ......... who saw you mowing and saw you put them in the shed?

If you are so quick to start calling people rednecks maybe you had it coming. If they were black what would you have called them.

Saying "Blackie" is no worse or better than saying "whitey" or anything else along those lines. I'll say what I please, because I don't have the energy to worry about what might offend some random person on the internet. In real life, social etiquette demands that I be more "P.C.", but even then I think people are too sensitive nowadays.

"Blackie" isn't a derogatory term in my book, seeing as how the people this refers to happen to be...black. I can't control what other people are offended by, so I don't try to (besides the obvious and well-documented terms).

And reading over what I just typed, I see that it could come off as me being an ****...rest assured, that isn't far from the truth!

"Redneck" has been derogatory for decades. It's the same as calling someone or something "****". There are people who actually are **** (or Redneck), and then there's people that are called those things simply because of the negative connotations of the word.

I have friends proud to be Rednecks, as it is really a lifestyle. I also have **** friends, who have been a huge part in helping me drop the "that's ****" tendencies I used to have.

That's the part that I didn't understand. I know some self proclaimed rednecks who are proud and associate it with the things they like to do. I also have some **** friends who aren't offended if you call them ****, cuz well they are ****.

Buuut, I get it now. Using it in a negative way is what people didn't like. Carry on.

    Ummm...no.
The term is probably derived from individuals having a red neck caused by sunburn or a mixture of sweat and the dust of red clay dirt common in the southern states. A citation from 1893 provides a definition as "poorer inhabitants of the rural districts...men who work in the field, as a matter of course, generally have their skin stained red and burnt by the sun, and especially is this true of the back of their necks".

Cited: Frederic Gomes Cassidy & Joan Houston Hall, Dictionary of American Regional English, 2002, p. 531.

It's only small-minded individuals that feel the need to berate someone for their ethnic, racial or religious background in lieu of a valid argument that use the term to mean anything other that what the original intent was. While the original intent was derogatory in and of itself, it was never a racially charged term even though the majority of the people it was used to define were white at the time. It was used to describe other migrant workers like Native American farmers, freed slaves, sharecroppers and even Asian immigrants as well as their poor Caucasian counterparts. (poor, in this sense meaning a non-plantation owning farmer who works his own fields instead of a staff of workers, slave or otherwise). The term came from the condition imposed upon a person working the dark, reddish clay of Southern U.S. farm land that stretches to Western Texas as well as the rest of the Mississippi water shed that runs through the center of the country.

Only in modern times does our pretty stupid society think they have an idea of what it means and uses it incorrectly to define a bigoted person of Southern U.S. origin or to mock those people who live simpler lives as being stupid, dimwitted or lacking class. (i.e.: white trash which is racially charged) The beginnings of the term are stupid to begin with but only our modern, snarky, pseudo-intellectual, hipster, self-righteous society could bastardize and already bastardized term in to something wholly unrelated.

So basically...it's a derogatory term today, even though it wasn't originally.

    thanks.

Thanks to all who shared concern, doro, you are right on, I and my wife little deb, have made a concerted effort to concentrate on her dying, hospice assisted mom, who lives on our prpoerty, my mom who was not at the house in question because of end of life health concerns.

It has gone from disbelief, to anger and an almost immediate empathy for those who are victims of violence or violation of their homes or continuing efforts to victimize them.

One of the things we now do is go over all the scenarios such as who did it, acquaintance friend, any grudges, or just some REDNECK or someone from virtually anywhere who was just driving by, noticed the real estate signs pulled in and got an idea they acted on later.

By the way, as far as tracks , yes, in front of the bank to the right in the pics of moms property, there were clear tracks to a point where they started to spin their tires, backed up, drove down the drive, around large junipers, loaded up, dropped their ugly **** picture, and left. none of which are helpful, as the responding officers refused to make a big moulange out of it. ;)

I think i will make copys of pic, post on bulletin boards around here, and ask if anyone can id to call the fannin co. sheriff. no big sweat for me and you never know.

Now, the term redneck began as a possibly rude, but probably just slang term for the farmers who worked the fields head down, and became badly sunburned on the back of their necks, who would come to town to sell their crops or buy supplys, usually on certain weekends.

I am first generation suburban ( east point ga., within viewing distance of atlantas taller buildings) kid, descended from dutch-british on one side, cherokee-jewish on other side.

Trust me, i will take the nickname of a hard working country folk with bowed head toiling in the fields to grind an existence from the soil anytime.

From this posting, a new term, **** REDNECK, as well as ASSLESS CHAPS, have been coined.

We will heretofore refer to miscreants with sun reddened necks who break with their more principled brethren as these.

Where did your definition come from?
The term came from union VS. non-union conflicts.
The rednecks were the union miners.

Where? What do you mean where?

I cited it in my post:

It's not from "wiktionary". It's an actual, cited source from actual Ph. D.'s 'cause I've been told so many times that Wikipedia is BS.

You can find out more here: http://dare.wisc.edu/

See what happens when you don't read and post knee-jerk responses?

BTW, the term in the definition I used dates back to 1890. 31 years before your 1921 miner reference.

Where? What do you mean where?

I cited it in my post:

Cited: Frederic Gomes Cassidy & Joan Houston Hall, Dictionary of American Regional English, 2002, p. 531.

It's not from "wiktionary". It's an actual, cited source from actual Ph. D.'s 'cause I've been told so many times that Wikipedia is BS.

See what happens when you don't read and post knee-jerk responses?

BTW, the term in the definition I used dates back to 1890. 31 years before your 1921 miner reference.

But the modern definition is linked to this incident.
I used that as a quick reference, but it came into
popularity due to this conflict. It was no small deal.
It was front page news, and people of that generation
linked that to the term. There's no shortage of references to
that, either. Online or in history books. Hardly knee jerk.
Yes, I can agree it has meant different things at different times
in history. But I just knew too many older people in my youth
that used the term in that reference. Defiant to authority.
The underdog. Poor but proud. The whole thing turned into an
insult starting in the 60's, replacing "poor white trash"
But I refuse to get too "upset' byt he definition.

Yes, those were indeed some thieving rednecks.
Let's hope they are caught and punished. SOON.
