Harley Davidson 100th Anniv.

I was driving home from work tonight, and the beggining of Harley Week is totally in the air. There were packs of 20 to 30 bikers every 100 or so feet. Pods of 5-10, and single riders. They are ALL over the place. They estimate there will be 300,000 (VERY low estimate) bikers here this weekend for the unknown show on Sunday.

3 HUGE acts suspected. Elton John, Tim McGraw, Kid Rock, a ton of others. The Rolling Stones. All of the above are rumors.

Anyhow, I don't think any of you out there can fathom how huge this is....and how loud this is. All I can hear out my window right now is the constant growling of Harley's. I can't say I hate it...because I love it. Wish I could afford a bike right now, but I can't.

Anyhow...as soon as I get some pictures I'll show you guys. I mean, this is so big there were people lined up waving to the bikers on the overpasses as they drove below them on the expressway. It's a freaking WEDNESDAY afternoon!

That's where my dad is on his way to now. he left for Seattle, WA on Friday, Aug. 8th to meet up with some buddies, and they are now en route to Milwaukee. They usually go to Sturgis, SD but chose the Harley party this year. I rode with him to Sturgis in August of 2000, and it was amazing. There were up to a million bikes I believe. I'll have to post some of his pics when he gets home.

I have heard it's supposed to make Sturgis look like a picnic. Surely the 300,000 I heard must have been the people coming in today.

There isn't a hotel room avail. for 100 miles.

I wish I would have invested in Harley Davidson stock 5 years ago when I was thinking about it. From $15 to $50 now and it has held its own during this "economic slowdown" we have had.

People just dig them Harleys. Its definitely something else and a growing phenom with no apparent end to it. The sound of them pipes would probably make a SVS show some respect as well!

Low 11's in the quarter and the sound will grow hair on your chest. It idles very cammy and shakes like a paint mixer at the lights.

damm ED, thats a machine there..

i go to the track around here, and when the bikes hit the strip thats something to see, But when the bad boys the Harleys come out now thats a show, low deep rumble.. they don't have the rocket take off like the **** drag bikes but they get hummin pretty fast in the long run, we only have a 1/8' mile here though.. hardly enough room to get cookin for the fast stuff

That bike'd make many-a-men drool, Doc. How is the riding going to be with your back?

I got my first dirt bike in 5th grade... went through the shameful moped years of 8th-9th grades (although, I could drive myself across town to school which was nice).. bought/rode/sold a couple of other bikes through the years... and sold a Honda 650 Nighthawk (10,000 rpm redline) when I graduated from grad school and headed down to mid-MO. You could pull the front wheel of that thing off the ground on any shift except into overdrive.. tremendous acceleration and roll-on.

But.... I babysat a friend's 1100 Suzuki for a long weekend a couple of years ago.. and I'll tell ya, I don't know if it is a change in me or the fact that I've got two kids.. but being out on the road with these totally whacked drivers and these blind Missouri roads.. between the SUV-driving women talking on the phone ignoring stop signs and the teenage girls talking to their friends ignoring stop signs and the teenage boys sitting down so low to look cool... it put the fear of God in me. I'd still love to have another bike.. someday... in Montana, maybe... but I've been cured of the "bug" that used to eat at me anytime I didn't have a bike.

I do miss looking down past a humming engine and seeing the road fly by.....

I haven't ridden it since before my surgery in May. I might be able to start riding soon. I have to at least burn through the tank of gas I have in it (circa early May with Stabil), and wash/wax before she goes away for the winter. I might sell it outright since a three level spinal fusion with hardware and a motorcycle don't really go too well together. We'll see....I certainly won't sell it this year; too close to the hunting season and winter for anyone is upstate NY to care about buying a bike.

P.S, I wish I'd known some of you sooner because if you have a Harley I have a GREAT place here that you guys could crash at. I'm about 4 miles from all of the activities, right next to Miller Park by the expressway into downtown.

This has been a coin toss for me for some time now. Get a Harley or a Gyrocopter, I've decided on a copter, not a chopper.

Looking into a model like this one below. Hopefully if all goes as planned, I'll begin construction next summer. Right now I am in the heavy research stage of my design.



I figure it will cost about 10-15k, about the same as a Harley. It'll just be a much better mode of transportation:)

On a side note, I checked out Wilco's "Hotel Yankee Foxtrot" per your reccomendation and decided to order it and three other Wilco CD's off of BMG. Can't wait to hear them. I've been looking for some new music lately.

I would think ZZTop would be a good choice. I beleive they played at their last bash (90th?).

They need to get the original Steppenwolf to reform just so they can play "Born To Be Wild".

Anyhow...I said it was rumored, not what I thought it was going to be.

It seems logistically impossible for them to get here. It would be a transatlantic flight here and then back.

ZZ Top is already performing on the 31st somewhere else.

The show is at Veterans park. And this is the biggest stage i've ever seen built for one show.

Oh, I saw Wilco about 7 years ago right after A.M. was released. I like the CD, but they really ROCKED live... the CD was much more 'country' and mellow.

I've wanted to own a Harley for many years, but the $$$ has kept me at bay and the fact I've wanted to build a gyrocopeter since my high school days. A Harley would get me some instant grat. for sure, but not near the freedom the gyro will later down the road.

The plans came today for the one in the pic, but I'm not sure it's the one I'm going to go with. I'll look over the plans for the next few weeks and decide.

I want to build it from scratch and take my time, I'm in no hurry and don't want to drop 8-10k on a kit.

What is the engine?

Below is a good pic of what I'm after, a very simple open frame design.

Engines usually run in the 40-60hp range. Common models are Rotax and Subaru. Minimun speeds are about 10mph, cruise in about 50 and tops are about 60-70.

My main goal this year and most of next is to get plans, check out different models, costs, local availability of parts and such.

Then, it will be time for construction.

Demiurge, I just listened to brief cuts of several tracks and liked what I heard. My best friend told me that if I like them to check out Uncle Tupelo, the Wilco singers first band. I may just have to do that. I'll be glad if I've finally found some new music. i can't stand any of the stuff they play on the radio.

He told me about them too. I'm going to wait and see how I like Wilco before getting any more stuff for now. I'm of the opinion that almost all of the new music out right now sucks. I wish I could throw out some underground bands that I like, but names escape me now. All I've been listening to as of late is hard-bop jazz (1950's-early '60's) like Miles Davis, Art Blakey, Horace Silver, and Thelonius Monk, to name a few, plus Radiohead and the Doves 'Lost Souls.' The music scene is horrible, with all this heavy crap that all sounds the same to me. Default is Nickleback is Disturbed. It all sounds the same to me. I hope I don't sound too cynical.

No because 99.9% of what is on rock radio is overproduced ****. Sure I can listen to those songs every once in a while, but it has nothing of substance to keep me coming back. Thats just how it goes.
