Added to my growing collection of vintage Polk Speakers:

A set of Polk Monitor 4a's in near perfect condition! It's like they came out of a time capsule... not even a speck of dirt on 'em.... no rusty screws or spiders in the bass port... and Peerless tweeters... my first Polk's with these tweets, boy do they sound sweet!!

oh, and a bonus: they have sequential serial numbers... somebody loved these speakers, and now they're mine! Sorry if I was the one who outbid you on eBay (not really)... check 'em out!

I guess they may have used a less cheesy vinyl in the early days... These are the 'walnut' vinyl version... the 'rosewood' ones are the cheesiest, imo.

Nice buy! I've seen several Monitor 4s on e-bay but yours are the first I've seen with the Peerless tweeter.

Damn, those look like real walnut speakers. Now I wonder if the SDAs and SRS' used vinyl covers or real walnut. They weigh as much as a small tree!!!
Statistics show that 98% of us will die at some point in our lifetime.

The other 2% will work for WalMart.

I was one of the several people you outbid for those. Now that I see them in closeups I definitely should have bumped my max. Congrats, man. Those are beauties!

thanks! I figured that I had to be bidding against at least one other Club Polk member!

yea, they're in A++ condition... I probably paid more than they're worth on re-sell, but I'm never gonna sell 'em so that doesn't really matter... as Don73 noted, I've seen plenty of the later-build Monitor 4's on eBay but had never seen an early set with the Peerless tweeters go up for bid.

I've had pretty good luck with my eBay Polk purchases so far...(knocking on wood-grain vinyl as I say that)... of the four sets that I own I've bought three on eBay. (I'm the original owner of the Monitor 5B's, which I bought new in the mid 80's) All of the used ones I've bought in are in A+ condition and were sold for very reasonable prices imo.

I've had much success buying speakers off e-bay. Not so much with electronics. Speaker prices have been reasonable but shipping costs vary so much with sellers causing some prices to be excessive. But I don't have a Goodwill where I can get $10 Monitor 10s or a dumpster where they're free.:frown:

Geez, what a downer George.... Actually, I haven't posted in quite a while (at least a year) and it seems my counters were reset back to zero, not that they were in the thousands or anything (over 9,000 posts? seriously?... spare me... maybe you need to get a life?)... and the reason for the post was not to put it in anyone's face, but to 1) spotlight that there can be some nice finds to be had 'out there' on eBay and 2) to see if any of you CP mo-fo's were trying to outbid me on these... apparently there was at least one of you (us?) in the fray. And yea, these aren't the Holy Grail of speakers or anything but it's pretty rare to see 'em pop up anywhere, esp. in this condition... thought someone on this board would be interested in seeing them as well.. if you're not then... I suggest that you don't read the freakin' thread...

I concur. We called the rosewood Polks' finish "orange"; fortunately one cannot hear the cheeze :-)

Nice find starbuck. I'm glad you found them and hope you enjoy them for years to come. I'm slowly amassing a small collection of older Polks myself and enjoy seeing others doing the same.

Interestingly these 4's have the same screw-post speaker wire connectors as my larger 5's do vs the smaller spring-clip version I've seen used on later model 4's. They seem to be a heavy build for such a (relatively) small speaker.

Serial numbers are 4 4972 & 4 4973 if this helps identify them further (build year, etc).

Research so far has me thinking these are pre-1985 Monitor 4's (vs 4A). polksda.com has a 1985 full model line brochure which shows the Monitor 4 with the SL-1500 dome tweeter already used in that year. I have seen pics of these with the Peerless tweeter with the logo a) on the cabinet and 2) on the speaker grills, like this set. No idea which placement was used first. Anyone know or care to guess?

Its great that he found a good deal more power to him. I just hate people that act like they better then other people. He said his post got reset so thats why he only had 3 and if thats the case then I take back what I said. But as it is now it just looks like he is here to brag and not bring anything positive.

I see nothing he wrote that implies he thinks he is better than anyone. Where did that come from? I don't see that he is bragging about the speakers. He is just expressing how happy he is to get a nice set of speakers. Whether or not his post were reset is not relevant to him being able to tell us about his new speakers. IF he was here to brag on the speakers and then try to resell them here that might be a different story but I see no problem posting to let everyone know you like your new speakers.

And making negative comments about the OP's intent (as inferred by you) is not acting like you're better than them? What positive thing(s) are you bringing to this thread? I'd look in the mirror a bit more if I were you....

Now... you've successfully hi-jacked a thread. Congratulations. Are you feeling better?

I think he's just excited that his new speakers are different from other Monitor 4s and that they are in such pristine condition. I'm interested in the speakers now and I'd like to hear how they sound. There's really nothing wrong with bragging.......who here doesn't brag when they buy a new component?
I enjoy reading threads like this but the negative comments are disappointing because there is no reason for them. OP ignore what some say and enjoy your new speakers........they are somewhat unusual and interesting. Thanks for sharing.

    Starbuck,

Ignore the whiners. I personally enjoy seeing vintage Polk monitors in configurations I have not seen before. Your M 4's are really nice and I'd be grinning too. If you find anymore info on them please continue to share it.

    Now I'm going to thread-jack.

What is that artwork over your stereo? I dig it.
    Sounds good to me...
