Speaker mounting into a trailer help needed

So, I listened to the wrong person.... I bought these really cool DXi650 speakers, mounted them in the recommended ring mounts, put them against the trailer overhead, and turned them on. They sound like crap....
I suspect my enclosure is the problem, but, okay, I don't know what I am doing,,,,, can someone help?
This is a 1978 airstream camping trailer that I am working with.
The two-thick plastic ring(s) was shaped to fit the hard plastic wall radius. The speaker is fairly close to the hard plastic wall (within maybe 1/2"). The hard plastic wall has not been cut out except to fish the speaker wire. Behind the hard plastic wall is some open space, perhaps 6" or 10" deep and the full width of the trailer. There is fiberglass insulation stuffed in there.
The wife is giving me crap for drilling holes into her trailer wall. If you guys say I need to cut out the hard plastic wall inside the mounting rings I will be drawn and quartered if it don't work....
Any suggestions would be appreciated.
Thanks, John H

Well, I talked with a car audio guy today. He said that I have to cut out the plastic wall behind the speaker inside the mounting ring. That makes sense, I just wanted a second opinion.
