Comcast sound cutting out

I have similar problems to this old thread:
http://www.polkaudio.com/forums/showthread.php?t=98478
The sound through my Comcast cable cuts out sporadically missing a word here or there. Some channels being worse than others and some times of the day being worse than others. It's a similar sound to a CD skipping on a scratch. At it's worst it skips every 10-15 seconds.
I don't see much of a resolution in that thread however. It seems counterproductive to get a coaxial/optical adapter when I am using all HDMI inputs and outputs. I see that you can get HDMI/component versions, but I'm wondering if it's going to lower the sound quality. I am confident in the speaker setup, since the other input sources like my Blu-Ray player and stereo work fine and the sound through the receiver and speakers sounds amazing.
The cable box is a new replacement also. I changed out the HDMI cables with no change. I also had Comcast check the line and signal strength and my signal is overly strong if anything.

Same thing happens to me. Never anything to do with the video just the audio drops.
I even updated the firmware in my Onkyo 608 and it didn't help. Just part of the "Comcast/Xfinity Experience" I guess..
I am using HDMI and have considered going to Optical/Coax to see if it's just a HDMI handshaking issue. If you do the same you won't be missing out on any sound quality because at the most they send compressed Dolby Digital 5.1. A lot of channels are just Dolby Pro Logic. -
Thanks for the help. I will try optical for lack of any other options at this point. I assume I'd have to sacrifice on HD picture doing that or is it possible to run HDMI picture and optical sound?-Samsung 47" LED

I use optical for audio, never any issues.
this is on the parents htpc... I don't watch tv... but they deffo woulda complained to me if they had that problem...always wanna blame me
edit: if you want optical/hdmi.. use hdmi from tv to source and optical from source to receiver -
I posted almost the same problem w/ Cablevision being the supplier. What would happen as I changed channels there would be this intermitable delay. Sometimes lasting seconds and on ocassion never to come back. Besides this I would get all the problems the Vios commercials would rag about. Now through the forum I've learned that cable systems don't like HDMI running through AVRs having to do w/ handshake off the cable. I don't undrestand this at all because all HD boxes are made for HDMIcables, optical and audio.
But I do sympethise w/ your problem. In this day and age were they know to the second of air time your watching they could improve on the interconnect between tv, avr and HDMI. I do not use my tvs' speakers ever and get audio via optical. ...LW2chl- Adcom GFA- 555-Onkyo P-3150v pre/amp- JVC-QL-A200 tt- Denon 1940 ci cdp- Adcom GFS-6 -Modded '87 SDA 2Bs - Dynamat Ext.- BH-5- X-Overs VR-3, RDO-194 tweeters, Larry's Rings, Speakon/Neutrik I/C- Cherry stain tops Advent Maestros,Ohm model E

I do work for a major telecom company. Let's just say that the HDMI handshake is a known issue. If you can just use optical audio out
