Hi,
I'm planning on getting an F/X Wireless surround speakers. They will be hooked up on my Denon 1911. The online manual states that it recommends NOT using any automated calibration system (in my case Audyssey).
Can anyone confirm the sound quality of these F/X wireless speakers or any Surroundbar calibrated with Audyssey? Some brands state that their soundbars work well with the audyssey.

Soundbars do all sorts of funky things to the phasing and equalization of speakers from a single fixed point to emulate true surround sound effects with sounds radiating from different parts of the room. They more or less create auditory illusions that trick your brain into perceiving a sense of directionality and depth.....the same way stereoscopic 3D video creates optical illusions to trick your brain into perceiving a greater sense of depth.
Systems like audyssey measure the actual frequency response (actual movement of soundwaves) from various parts of the room. The audyssey microphone won't likely be tricked by the manipulation of phasing and equalization the same way a human ear and nervous system would. I'm not exactly sure how audyssey would respond to this, but I'd image that it wouldn't produce the desired effects. My System Showcase!

To bad you couldnt turn the processing off and just use it as a single amplified speaker. That would make a great additon to a 5.1 to up grade to a 6.1 surround system.
Use it as a center back channel.AVR: Onkyo Tx-NR808

There was a day when you just used a handheld meter to calibrate your HT. Just because it's manual doesn't make it un-useable.CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I would imagine that most auto-setup methods would work fine so long as they're just level-matching (or doing minimal EQ like Yamaha's YPAO). However, Audyssey in particular alters things in the time domain, which can cause issues with the methods soundbars use to create the surround effect. I would guess that if it changed things too much, it would have a very negative effect on the sound of things placed in the surrounds. Audyssey also strives to eliminate unwanted reflections by tapering off the highest frequencies a bit, and since soundbars are designed to bounce sound off the side walls to simulate having speakers placed there, this would minimize their effectiveness.Equipment list:

Audyssey is over rated anyway. At least in my opinion. The F/X is a treat your ears will love.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~

I love Audyssey when it's properly done... but there are too many people not using tripods or mic stands and not following the basic rules of calibration, and then they wonder why they get such crappy sound. On my 9.1 setup, it does an excellent job of creating a very cohesive soundfield.
But yeah, it really shouldn't be used unless you have a full setup, not any kind of speaker that relies on psychoacoustics or reflections.Equipment list:
