    Many times in the past the "best" singer was voted off early. The vote for your "favorite" format works because then whoever wins already has a fan base and their Idol produced record will be sure to sell. Every now and then the "best" singer wins but it's rare. And I agree that Taylor Hicks was not the best singer that year but he sure was popular. Too bad he's way better live than on record.
