I'm absolutely baffled.

I thought Pia would win it, and I can't even contemplate how she would not be in the top 3. But 9th? What was America thinking

The votes seem to have been incredibly accurate up until now. That girl can sing and will end up with an incredible career despite the bad results tonight.

It's not vote for the best. It's vote for your favorite. My favorite is Casey but Pia was the best hands down. If they want the "best" to end up last they need to tell people to vote for who you think is the best, NOT who you like the most. Idol has always been a popularity contest and never who's the best. Thus Sanjaya.

    I politely disagree.

I would think "rigged" would push it MORE to someone like Pia who will sell millions once awarded a recording contract which most definately will be happening after tonight's anomaly.

Pia actually reminds me a lot of Jennifer Lopez, and I think we will find that she can act too.

What inspired said. I'm not watching this year, but the whole "it's rigged" thing doesn't hold water. Never did. Not saying it's not possible or anything, it's just that in this case it doesn't make any sense.

You are right that popularity is a huge part of it, but in fairness, the top 3 have generally been pretty talented musically and the "best" usually amongst them.

Pia going 9th, even based on popularity alone seems just plain nuts.

And yes, Sanjaya became a teenie-bopper "fad" that led him to 7th place, but not top 3.

    1) It is entertainment; as was pro wrestling on TV in the 1950s. Both, of course, were and are scrupulously "real".
    2) How would, say, Bob Dylan have done on American Idol in, say, 1960?

Not really a fair thing to ask, since it's a singing competition (in theory) and he would have never even made it in. And rightfully so. I love Dylan, but not beacuse of his mellifluous voice.

That's the thing though, last night proved it's not even a singing competition, it's a popularity contest.

How some people don't see this is beyond me.

Granted it is called American IDOL, but that show is much more about overall appearance than it is about talent.

I'll be curious to see how that new show Voices turns out...

Well that's why I said "in theory." Of course it's really just a popularity contest, and pretty / charming people win. But those are also the type of people who a) draw viewers and b) sell records these days, so... the show knows what it's doing.

it's better she's voted off now anyway, that way with future record deals she wont be tied to american idol the rest of her life paying Ryan to say "we'll give you the results after this"...

Again, I agree it is a popularity contest, but you both are pointing out the exact anomaly when you write things like, "overall appearance, pretty / charming" are what wins.

Pia was all of the above PLUS a singing voice that can pretty much go anywhere it needs to.

That's why I think the results were skewed. She's got it "going on" on ALL counts, meaning singing AND looks.

The point Slyder made about already having gotten great exposure, but being voted off before becoming too indebted to Idol being a good thing for her future is very true.

I just wonder if there are technological ways to "spam" millions of texts to affect the outcome, or if it really does boil down to real people dialing through as many times as they can in the allotted time

I ask the conspiracy theorists - who benefits from the scam?

From everything I've heard, the "fans" are annoyed by this outcome, whcih means it affects Idol popularity negatively. If she's so marketable, the producers of the show would WANT her to continue, so why would they conspire to get her voted off? I just don't see who benefits besides the girl herself, and the only wayt o get yourself "voted off" is to have EVERYONE ELSE be voted FOR (since you vote for people to STAY, not to leave). So... who benefits from this conspiracy?

I saw that last night. I thought the bearded guy was gonna be up on the chopping block and he didn't even get to be in the three to be possibly booted. Something happened, don't know exactly what went down but there is no way in my opinion that she did not get enough votes to stay on. She's got the looks, she's got the talent and she damn sure is better than some of the other finalists.

We'll be seeing more of her in the future, without a doubt. It just won't be on American Idol. I must say, she took it like a trooper. Way to go, kid.

That's such a lazy answer. It's the most popular show on TV, and ratings are up from last year from what I hear. Potentially alienating your fans seems ilke a risky move to make to get people "talking" about a show they already talk about.

If American Idol was really a contest to find the best singer the voting would be different.

If this show were serious you'd only be allowed one vote and that would be for who should be voted out instead of voting for your favorite as many times as you like!

It's done this way for a reason.

Was Taylor Hicks the "best" singer or was he the most popular?
