Actually no, no they're not, but I bet all you Apple guys guys saw this thread title and got all in a hissy (says me, sitting here watching my Apple TV playing NFS Shift on my iPad2).
I did notice though that Amazon has appeared to pick a side and is backing Android (at least for now) with their Android Market app store and now their new cloud thing that works with Android.
Google is already doing well with their Android stuff, but being in bed with Amazon should help them even more. I just like having competition and options.
As for me personally, I've actually found the perfect compromise between iOS and Android devices, I just use both. I use Android for my phone and Apple for my tablet.
I always have my phone on me and I interact with my phone alot more. I don't play games or run a bunch of apps on my phone, it's really just for talking, texting, email, web and an mp3 player with your occasional app like Shazaam or RedLaser or Banking. Given what I use my phone for and the fact that I interact with it alot more frequently, the most important thing for me (as long as it can do all those things) is the ability to customize how I interact with the phone. It's not about changing things like colors or having a live wallpaper (though those are nice), its about me being able to control how the phone unlocks, having direct dial icons where I want them on the screen, having widgets that either give me info or allow me to control things like toggling WiFi, GPS, Auto Rotation, etc. Having that kind of control on my phone makes the overall experience much smoother and easier.
On the tablet, however, I don't care about any of that. I never need to pull my tablet out and glance at the screen for 1 second and get all the info I need or be able to accomplish a task very quickly. If I pull the tablet out, chances are I'm going to be using it for a few minutes. The interface isn't as important to me, the tablet is all about the apps. And let's face it, there are far better apps for iOS than for Android tablet. From games to stuff like working with documents, the Apple is just better in every respect. The tablet itself is lighter and thinner than the competition but I suspect that'll change over time, for me though it's all about the apps, and they just 'work' better on the iPad.

When Steve Jobs can no longer run Apple, the company will slowly fade to nothing. I hope not, but history might repeat itself.

Taken from a recent Audioholics reply regarding "Club Polk" and Polk speakers:
"I'm yet to hear a Polk speaker that merits more than a sentence and 60 seconds discussion."
My response is: If you need 60 seconds to respond in one sentence, you probably should't be evaluating Polk speakers.....

Just saw an add for the asus slate. Looks interesting, but pricey. I'd like to get something similar to that, but when it's 1/2 the price.
On a side note, I saw on another forum that they had rooted their Atrix, if you haven't found out how to do it, I can ask him.

I rooted my Atrix the day I bought it, but rooting it only half the story. Rooting is really only the first step towards getting what you want on your phone. The second step usually involves installing a custom ROM, and that is where Motorola has cut us off at the pass with their locked bootloader.
That'll get cracked eventually, but honestly at this point I really don't have a need for it. I have a philosophical disagreement with their locking of the device, but really have no practical issue with it at this point, its more the principle than anything else. -
And yes, the Asus does look very nice, I've been keeping an eye on the Transformer for a while now.
-
Right. I was under the impression that once rooted, you could do anything you wanted.
I completely understand 'the principle' of things. That same principle is why I tend not to....errr, nevermind. Not trying to derail this thread anymore.
-CodyMusic is like candy, you have to get rid of the rappers to enjoy it -
Normally once you root you can, but some companies like to lock down the bootloader so that you can't install custom ROMs, which is dumb and should be dissalowed by Google.

Android and Amazon are great.............Apple and iTunes...not so much

Android and Amazon and Apple and iTunes are both fantastic. Admittedly, I have never nor will I ever, used an apple product or iTunes, but there is no denying that the iPhone was revolutionary and has set us on the path of a world full of fantastic devices that we are on today.
Each has their place, each has their markets. It just so happens that Android fits me better.
On one hand, you get one device in which all of the parts and the operating system are designed from the ground up together.
On the other hand, you get many many devices with an operating system that isn't perfect for all, but a good base to start from, if you dare.
What is great for everyone is that there is literally something for all and it is pretty sweet that we have the choices we do. Freedom is awesome.
Pick your poison and be happy.

Tablet isn't high on priority list at the moment. I don't need every new techie gadget the minute it comes out. Hell, I just recently got my first smart phone. I don't need stuff like that for my job and I don't need it just to say I have it.
Now if I was on the road a lot or needed it for my job, that would be a different story.

I'm waiting on the day when these tablets become what some of these high end remotes currently do.
If I can set at my couch, turn the oven on to 350* and notify me when its there, dim the lights, turn the fan on and turn the AC down a couple degrees. Then bring up the channel list on directtv with whats playing, then scroll down, select a show I want to DVR and another show I want playing on the TV...that'd be effin sweet to get in a package with a computer for sub $1000.
But then you'd have to upgrade all the other electronics (ovens, thermostats) to be able to communicate...
-CodyMusic is like candy, you have to get rid of the rappers to enjoy it -
You can already do most of that stuff, the problem is no one wants to pay for it / do all the wiring. "Home Automation" has been around for 15 years at least but will never take off until a cheap lightswitch also includes some sort of RF receiver in it.If you will it, dude, it is no dream.
-
You can do alot of that now, but not all of it. I know you can control home automation and devices that allow network control. So I can use the TiVo app to both browese shows and completely control my box and playback, and there's a an app for Apple TV that does the same thing.
But I can't control my receiver or BDP because neither of those has that network control.
So we're not there yet, but we're getting close. -
Right, but I havent seen it available for a tablet yet...unless you guys have?
I know about home automation and such, I run a few conference rooms where I work that has a decent amount of automation (projectors, lights, blinds, tvs), but its through an $8000 remote, much less everything else.
-CodyMusic is like candy, you have to get rid of the rappers to enjoy it -
I haven't seen it all through a tablet yet but that's only because the market doesn't exist.
There are a lot of great PC remotes for the iPhone (and iPad and I'm sure Android too). If you had network-connected light switches nothing would stop you from putting that in there too. But who wants to network their light switches and oven?If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -

I'm with you here. They're putting all their chips on that that bet as well. They're going to be integrating webOS in all phone, tablet, laptop, and PC devices. Perhaps like a dual boot. I like the idea, especially if it gets you near instant-on performance. Plus it seems t be the only TRUE multi-tasker. Aside from the playbook, which looks pretty smooth itself.design is where science and art break even.
