Yes, all my amps are over 20 years old except one, I have 5 to play with.

Got a new X-amp coming tomorrow, can't wait to see how it holds up to my amp busting Martin Logans :). I'm more interested in how its sounds, not blowing it up ;).

I sold a Pioneer Spec 4 amp in a garage sale a little over a year ago (before I decided to give 2 channel a whirl again) for $20. They are repeatedly going for $1500 on Ebay now. Yes..I am occasionally an idiot....and yes....some of the old stuff can still sound amazing.

The Sequel's, first editions built in 1985, the first of the 'curvelinear' panels. I just love them! Using a Yamaha MX-800U with them right now, I haven't hooked up the new X-amp yet (it's only 75wpc, so I'm not expecting much )

It is all a matter of personal preference. Even new gear my friends like, I don't like as much.

I have a pair of Heathkit W-5M's (rebuilt) circa late 1950's.....classic Williamson push-pull design. Arguably the most sought after iron ever.

I'd put them up against just about anything out there.

This post got me interested in finding a pair of W-5M's and I've found a guy selling locally, but they are without tubes.

I'm new enough to tubes that I'm concerned I won't be able to tell if the transformers are OK unless I buy a set of tubes and take my Variac along.

Is there a way to troubleshoot transformers without tubes?
