Are there that many 42" and larger 720P panels still out there? I find it hard to see any difference in a good 720 vs a good 1080 at normal viewing distance, until you get above 50". But that is just me. I would not worry about it. Just like audio, find the one that looks best to your eyes, do some research on reliability, calibrate it to your liking and enjoy.

I've always found that I can often distinguish slight differences in the store, where they have multitudes of TVs to compare. I find it much more difficult to compare the one TV in my room to anything else.

While there are differences, I'm of the opinion that many people spend way more than they need to, just to have "the best" or "the latest and greatest", even if they're not able to discern any difference. I'm not talking about videophiles here, I'm talking about the masses.
