Apple TV - will it work

OK, here's what I want to be able to do, 2 things

1 - I want to be able to stream music, movies and photos from my iTunes library to the TV
2 - I want to be able to control this on the iPad2. So I want to be able to pull up an interface on the iPad and see all my media there and then click on something there and have it play on the TV.

Is it possible, and will the Apple TV device get me what I want?

Works perfectly with no problem, I'm using both right now in the bedroom. Turn on Homesharing in Itunes & AppleTV and you can stream everything over to the AppleTV. Airplay works when watching anything on the Ipad and wirelessly sends it over to the AppleTV, this also works with Youtube on the Ipad . Definitely some slick features that work well. HD picture looks very good on my 42 incher though only 720p with the AppleTV. For $99.00 you can't beat it.

I also travel with my ATV and for that alone it has been a worthwhile investment.

Apple got it all figured out. Airplay is the coolest technology to come along since the DVR/ Tivo.

I'm sure its slick. Apple does really well in regards to UI. However, just wanted to point out that XBMC has been doing this for several years now. I don't use the Wifi/browser remote control since I am usually in the same room when I am listening to my media, so it's easier to use the regular remote control.

Is it a remote control where I use the iPad to control the Apple TV, or is there an actual interface on the iPad itself where I can see the list of music and videos and music on the iPad screen and then hit play and it plays through the Apple TV? Or is it both?

TiVo has an app where I can view all the guide and recordings on my TiVo box on the iPad screen, and then click play and it plays on the TV, looking for something similar to that on the iPad.

OK, I just downloaded Remote. I don't have the Apple TV yet, going to get that today if it'll do what I want.

So I paired my iPad with iTunes and I've got the iTunes interface on the iPad. Then when I select a song or movie it plays through iTunes on my computer. How fraking cool is THAT!

So my question is, when adding an Apple TV will I get that same functionality? So will I be presented with the iTunes library interface on the iPad, select something, and then have it play through the Apple TV?

@maximillian: I'm an xbmc user too, and this is not the same. This is more like a dlna client, but the control is done by the 'server/host'.

OK, picked up an Apple TV today. Very cool, and easily worth the $99 they waynt for it. The functionality itself is rather basic, it streams stuff.

So what, TONS of devices do that?

What sets it apart for me is how well it integrates with iTunes and how the control and everything works with the iPad.

Is anyone else less than impressed with the quality on music playback? I need to do some more listening, but seems like audio quality is not as good as what i get through winamp on the PC playing the same file.

I almost posted this last night, but didn't since it is just hearsay. Anyway, since I love my iPod/Wadia combination I pay attention to Apple related posts, and in the recent past there has been two posts commenting on the lower level of Apple TV audio quality. Yours makes three.
Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes

Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables

Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
    Three 20 amp circuits.

I don't use mine to stream music, only for video. I use my Ipad & Squeezetouch app w/Squeezebox Touch box for music. A tad off topic but I like having the Ipad to control all the music outdoors over wireless. The app and Ipad are so simple to use, I can let any guest play/search for what they want and enjoy the tunes.

Streaming doesn't sound as good as when you have the hard drive directly connected to your system. I have the older Apple TV and VS the Streaming and the Older Apple Tv sounds much better running the same exact file. The Stream sounds compressed where as the ATV 160g sounds like the CD.

But the new Streamer ATV is an amazing little 99 gem. It's not exaclty the best sounding unit out there but for when your friends come over and use Airplay ,it's well worth it's asking price and then some. Pictures from trips and vacations , weddings or what have you is always a huge hit with Airplay. That alone is worth it man. I can go on and on how happy people are after owning one or 7.

Disable the equalizer in iTunes. It helps, but still lacking. I feel the file format is probably the culprit. check out this article on playing lossless music (flac, ape, etc) through itunes.

However, I have my HTPC directly attached to my HT rig and a squeezebox on the Stereo rig so I don't use those options. 1080p is a must for me and so is using better lossless codecs, so i'm out on apple for streaming. But their ability to make a simple product marketed to a certai market, and make it work as planned is undeniable. Although trying to get a macbook pro with OS X 10.6.3 to recognize a a mac snow leopard server on a network is apparently too much to ask for... but thats something for a different forum.

I know you use it so you can connect to your ipad, but did you try this option on the xbox 360? I don't need anything flashy (just music and pics), but it gets the job done. Maybe the quality is degraded on the xbox I don't know

TB I do have the Xbox running as an extender from my PC, which works very well in my HT. Quality is right on, and is usually pretty close to source. The ATV is in a different room, the airplay is neat, and I can tie everything together with the Ipad.

OK, more information on my issue.

When I start the movie from the AppleTV menu it works just fine and does not proceed to the next movie. However, when I start the movie using the Remote App on the iPad, it automatically goes to the next movie in the library and starts playing.

Even if nobody has a solution, can someone else test this for me and at least see if you're able to replicate my issue?
