My dog Sidney threw up out of no where about 30 minutes ago - somehow woke me up during the process. So I guess it wasnt like a graceful throw up...
Either way -- now she is constantly licking her chops and every second her head will jar forwards like she has hiccups -
But essentially every forward motion is followed by a lick and her breathing seems heavy.
This is very strange and I was just curious if anyone had any thoughts
Its almost like something is caught mid throat..
Im so confused - please help

Not for another 3 hours
I let her outside and she is eating grass - trying to vomit looks like
I cant ask her whats wrong so it seems logical to me at this point to try to let her sort it out- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -

You are doing it right. Let her eat grass and sort out whatever bad she has eaten. I also breath heavy after throwing up. Just keep an eye on her until she is ok again.HT/2 CH

Her motor skills seem fine...
I had her do a host of tricks (lay, sit, shake, high five, twirl, etc) - she did them fine and quickly.
She still eats - ate a treat without any issues...
Very strange
I looked all around the house but there is nothing out of order or missing... not sure
Im monitoring her right now- Not Tom ::::::: Any system can play Diana Krall. Only the best can play Limp Bizkit. -
Good to know --
May have to try something along those lines...

You were not listening to Barry Manilow last night? j/k If she is moving around normally it is probably no poison. Make sure she drinks water and let her eat some grass to get it out of the system. Both my dogs are throwing up once in a while. If there is no change in the general behavior I would not worry too much.HT/2 CH

Well after eating a **** ton of grass she seems basically normal - maybe a little on edge... but nothing like hard breathing or weird head motions and stuff...
Will monitor it for a little while longer and going back to sleep...
Thanks guys for the advice and support - mondo appreciated.

If its something digestive, I usually will not feed my dog their usual food for a day or so. I replace their meals with a tablespoon or two of pumpkin. My vet's advice was to let them rest their digestive system for about a day or so. Then bring them slowly back up (less regular food mixed with the pumpkin)to their usual routine. The pumpkin works like a champ. Hope this helps. Cheers.

Rice does a dogs stomach good, Trey.~ In search of accurate reproduction of music. Real sound is my reference and while perfection may not be attainable? If I chase it, I might just catch excellence. ~

It's just a matter of repetition...every time he does his business indoors, take the **** and him outside. After a while he should catch on to it.

I don't know what kind of dog you have but, do yourself a favor and learn about Canine GDV, a.k.a. "bloat". The symptoms almost fit your description, but thankfully, not quite! I have never seen one poster in a Vet's office warning of GDV symptoms!

I have used both of the above and they work. Also oatmeal is a good one to calm their stomach down.
And surprisingly we actually have given my dogs pepto before and it worked good as well. We mixed it in with some broken ritz crackers...
Hope the dog keeps doing fine (one of our dogs got sick two nights ago as well)"....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." William Bruce Cameron, Informal Sociology: A Casual Introduction to Sociological Thinking (1963) -
I'm glad your dog is feeling better. There is nothing worse than having a pet that you love be sick or in pain and you don't know how to help them.

I have two Labs, both had similar symptoms about a year ago, one worse than the other. My chocolate was wretching so much, he started throwing up small amounts of white foam which is an indication of bloat. If you saw Marley and Me, bloat is what caused the ending. As it turned out, both my dogs caught some airborn virus that was going around that required antibiotics. My suggestion, get her to the vet ASAP, the wretching can cause bloat in deep chested dogs and it is quickly fatal. The stomach rotates on it's axis and cuts off blood.David -
Good to hear the pup is on the mend Trey, don't know what I would do if my Husky ever got really sick. Sucks not being able to help them, yanno?

Jstas is right. Let her eat grass. She knows better what she needs than we do.
My Doxies go through this now and again. I have gone to the vet with them and all he did was give them saltwater to help induce vomiting. He told me letting them eat grass is just as good as it can either induce or calm depending on the breed.
Just keep an eye on her. -
Had a similar incident with my dog two weeks ago. He threw up all his food and then some foamy liquid. After this he started licking the floor, the walls and trying to eat anything he could.
My wife is a veterinarian but she was working at the time. I took the dog to one of the clinics she works at, as we know the doctors and other techs there, and they did an x-ray. It turns out his intestines were full of air/gas. They also found his stomach was full of "stuff", which turned out to be half a towel he ate after he got sick.
They had to give him some morphine or something to calm him down. The next day the gas had almost all gone away, but they had to go down his throat over 20 times with a camera and scope to pull out all the debris he ate while he was in a panic the night before.
All is well now, we think he had some sort of reaction to some medicine he got the day before but it is only a guess.
Anyway, his symptoms were similar to what you described. If it happens again or gets worse I would take him in and at least get an x-ray.
(I have our dogs x-rays I could post if you want a reference or something)
Good luck. -
With my two mutts, I'm a wait and see kind of guy. It sounds like the pup just had an upset stomache, and didn't like the taste of whatever it threw up, my lab has done this a few times. She did the grass thing, and after a bit was back up to 110%, as always. If it persists, take it to the vet. The weekend before last we we're out disc golfing with our dogs, and my lab sliced her paw on a piece of glass, pretty bad. I called the vet and he said he could rap it and give her some antibiotics, so we decided to forfit the $200.00 visit and take care of it ourselves. Its still cut, but healing nicely, I do believe she'll loose some of her paw pad, but it can't be sticked on the paw, so this would have happened either way.
Good luck! I think we all know here how important your dogs are after your last round with Buddy. Lilly and Drama send your dog their best! -
My dog had some vomiting issues. Turns out she has allergies. The vet recommended we give her ChlorTabs. We get them at wally and they're around 2 bucks for a hundred of them. Of course, this may not be the answer for your pet. Best of luck with your pooch.

This. Animals get into stuff all the time, and throw it up. As long as it's not persistent... if I ran to the vet every time my dog ate too much grass and threw it up (he does this all the freakin' time in the warm months) I'd be broke. If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
Ping sends his regards. He is a little down at the moment. He had one of his cruciate ligaments repaired last weekend. 6-8 weeks until he is fine again.HT/2 CH

Good advice here, the pumpkin helps for diarrhea as well. If you ever need to induce vomiting hydrogen peroxide works well too. Always keep an eye of things your dog might get into. A lot of things are very toxic to a dog that we would never think of: grapes, iron (watch those vitamins), raisins, chocolate, coffee, macadamia nuts, and even onions. The toxicity level depends on the ration of the food ingested and the dog's weight, but I would always consult a vet when in question. Sometimes the trip for charcoal or i.v. treatments is worth the peace of mind.

Glad to hear the pup is doing better. My one dog Buster likes to eat almost anything off the ground and when I walk him its a constant watch to see what he is picking up and eating. Sometimes he will get sick fron it and I will not feed him for 24 hours and then give him some rice or pumkin for his first meal and then he is usually good to go again untill the next time.

Well today she is acting 100% normal --
The vomitting did not concern me as she has a light stomach from the start.
What concerned me was the head movements and constant licking... very very strange - I thought she had bit into a power cord or something... kind of like a dementia thing.

Missed that part, oops. Glad everything is OK!If you will it, dude, it is no dream. -
FYI - ice cold waters also works for inducing vomiting in dogs. That may be easier than trying to shoot a syringe of anything down their throats.
Glad to hear your pup is doing better! After years of using a certain dog food our dog developed an allergy to it(we think they must have changed the recipe) because he was doing the same thing your dog was on a regular basis. We switched foods and he has been fine since(this was a few years back that we switched).I know just enough to be dangerous, but don't tell my wife, she thinks I'm a genius.

One of my dogs does this once in a while, the vet said it was like acid reflux that we get.She will wake up acting like she cant breath. She will eat grass leaves like crazy, I try to get her to sit with me for a while and rub her neck and belly. This will calm her down after a bit she is good as new.It relay freaked me out the first time,it might still be a good to check with your vet.I'm glad she is feeling better.

....my Cat did the same, a few days ago. Threw up, dry heaves and than hacked again with foam. Wouldn't eat right away. Next day she was fine and eating like a champ. Probably ate or drank something weird.
Just wish these guys would learn to hug the toilet bowel. Interesting how they watch you clean up their mess. Who is the superior species. Love all God's critters. -

Dee, how old is your cat & have you seen her doing this at other times as well? Has she been going to the bathroom a lot more etc? Has she lost weight?
