I always laugh at the people who say they own a Mac because it's immune to those types of things.

I know, I think the macs went down first 4 years in a row. Also, IE8 was not updated prior to the contest, but safari was. Apple is all about the kool aid

Yet, nobody says that. Virus and malware issues are virtually non-existent on Macs when compared to the Windows based PC counterpart. The reason is simple:

    Market Share

Wow, a hacker can bring down a Mac when they try? Say it ain't so...

This is totally true. However, I've had arguments with mac people that start like this: "It is impossible to write a virus for a mac, that is why they have no viruses"

if you watch a press conference where jobs speaks, I can see why customers get this impression.

Demi, maybe you're not the typical Apple guy, and maybe its where you live or whatever, but the general attitude of 'my product is superior and is immune to viruses' really is the general attitude of the majority of Apple owners and Apple store gnomes that I've encountered (at least here in the DFW area).

I've literraly heard Apple employees tell people that Macs don't get viruses because they're on Linux and you can't write viruses for Linux. If you don't believe me, walk into a few Apple stores and I guarantee you'll get that response at least once.

By the way, I actually happen to agree that MACs are generally more immune to viruses, and not just due to market share. Linux is a more secured OS than Windows, regardless of how many people use both.

So I agree that MACs are 'better' when it comes to viruses, I just think the people who think they're bulletproof are idiots.

I like most Apple products, but I can't stand Apple users.

Is it weird the the pretentious 'culture' of Apple users actually deters me from buying their products? I felt so *dirty* when I owned an iPhone.

edit: I'm actually in the market for a Laptop right now and am seriously considering a Macbook. But the workers in the Apple store annoy the f#$k out of me everytime I go in there.

I don't know if you can make the case that Linux is inherently more secure than the current Windows OS's. There were some pretty big changes and improvements to the Windows 64-bit driver model that made it a lot harder to create rootkits that can install themselves in the average browser hijack/drive-by. I agree that what makes MSFT OS and browsers seem insecure is market share. No one is going to try to create and propagate a virus that exploits some weakness in Konqueror.

The interesting thing is that at these contests it's hard to even find people who are willing to spend the time trying to hack Chrome. Of course, depending on your perspective, that might just be because Chrome itself is a virus designed to watch everything you and your computer do together!

Someone hacked into our work network (which is horribly insecure, but that's a whole other story) recently and brought down all our Linux boxes. No Windows boxes were touched.

BTW, OS X is built on UNIX, not Linux.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Macs run on a UNIX kernel. Not linux. Specifically, BSD.

Perhaps they go after the Mac first, because there's more prestige associated with taking one down. Windows PCs are a dime a couple hundred dozen.

actually, if you look at the interviews with the people who did it, it was easier to target the mac than the pc. It took more time/exploits to hit the pc than the mac. This was the case for the current one as well.

After having read up on the contest results so far, it does seem like the Mac/Safari combo was an easier take-down. The first guy to take down IE8/Windows needed to find and successfully combine three vulnerabilities to get out of the IE8 sandbox.

The guy who hacked Safari first said he also had a hack for IE8. He probably went after the Mac first because he'd rather own a MacBook Air than a Dell (or whatever windows machine was being given away).

While I have never liked Apple products, I do feel the same about having to using an iPhone. Since as part of my job I must manage and support all the wireless phones at work I am required to carry an iPhone. It is a good "device" but I wouldn't buy one on my own.

I did have one friend who was an Apple fan and always gave me crap about being a Windows user and how horrible Microsoft products were. One day I did finally come up with a response that ended the comments. While I agreed that Microsoft products can and will be buggy, target of viruses, malware (and so on) because of their market share it is because of those issues I remain employed.
