I agree they should have made this available earlier. I am a little worried about the "limited". I may wait. I will definitely get the extended version though.

I'm also hoping that they remastered it better too.. there were a lot of complaints about the original blu ray releases in terms of video quality.

That's why I stuck with my DVD release of LOTR. I can't believe how many releases on BR are simply disappointing from the Video Quality standpoint.

Hopefully the audio will be full blow, uncompressed DTS-HD.

I believe the 'complaints' are mostly leveled against the first installment for Fellowship of the Ring and how some of the CGI scenes were shot.

As you go thru the movies to RoTK - the VQ goes up.

The problem I have is that we'll probably see several releases:
    * The Ultimate LoTR boxed set with extra 'goodies',
    * The Uber Ultimate LoTR boxed set,

but wait....the Hobbit is coming out...
    * The Hobbit and LoTR (theatrical editions) boxed set

    hold on now.....
    * The Extended Hobbit and Extended LoTR boxed set

    Not done....

    * The Ultimate Hobbit/LoTR boxed set with extra 'goodies'

And by that time BD will be obsolete and we'll have a new better higher def format - and you get to buy it all over again....

    Sauron lives......

I have no idea if its been remastered or not, but I'd think they'd have listened to all the people complaining about the last batch...unless they're going to run their fingers through the icing one more time before finally getting it right.

I stuck with the EE DVD versions and won't budge until after the reviews are in on the new EE BluRay versions.

If it were me, I wouldn't pre-order. I also wouldn't wait long after the reviews are out, because the limited probably means these aren't going to be around forever. Could be wrong.

I own and have watched the EE DVDs 2 or 3 times each since I bought them. The content has worn on me. I don't think I can stand to see Frodo and Sam tear up again. I loved the opportunity to watch such a wonderful translation of an iconic childhood fantasy. I couldn't tell you how many times I've read the books since I was 14. I'm just LOTR'd out...not sure if Blu can make me watch it again.

    Combo rig:

Onkyo NR1007 pre-pro, Carver TFM 45(fronts), Carver TFM 35 (surrounds)
    SDA 1C, CS400i, SDA 2B
    PB13Ultra RO
    BW Silvers
    Oppo BDP-83SE

I think by definition DTS-HD is compressed. The whole point is to find a way to get lossless multi-channel audio on a BR disk, so compression is needed. Uncompressed it is lossless versus regular DVD DTS.

Interestingly, the original LOTR BRs do not say what audio format is being used, and I did not feel like turning on the HT to see what is being used.
Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable
Sony XA-5400ES SACD; Pass XP-22 pre; X600.5 amps
Magico S5 MKII Mcast Rose speakers; SPOD spikes

Shunyata Triton v3/Typhon QR on source, Denali 2000 (2) on amps
Shunyata Sigma XLR analog ICs, Sigma speaker cables
Shunyata Sigma HC (2), Sigma Analog, Sigma Digital, Z Anaconda (3) power cables

Mapleshade Samson V.3 four shelf solid maple rack, Micropoint brass footers
    Three 20 amp circuits.

I came of age with these stories. Yea, they grow on your and eventually grow old. The cool movie set gave the trilogy some new life and I will buy this set for a last look (for a while). Thx for the heads up.

Actually, since the very beginning of blu-ray, they've had lossless multichannel uncompressed LPCM tracks on blu-ray. But as you imply, they just take up a lot of space. DTS-HD MA and TrueHD are just compression codecs. They compress an LPCM track to save space and 'unzip' back to the same LPCM track. The track that is actually played is the PCM track once decoded.

BTW, they're still releasing uncompressed LPCM tracks on blu-rays like the upcoming Scary Movie 4. But they are increasingly rare.

Extended "Rings" Trilogy Hits Blu June 28th

Warner Bros. Pictures has now confirmed a June 28th release date for the Blu-ray "Lord of the Rings Trilogy: Limited Extended Edition" boxset.

When the previous theatrical editions were released on Blu, "The Fellowship of the Ring" scored poor reviews for its transfer which was likely taken from an old master. As a result, this version "has been remastered from the original 2k digital files". The same restoration will not be performed on the other two films though all will get 6.1 DTS-HD Master Audio tracks.

This three-movie collection will be presented in a 15-disc set. The films will be spread across two Blu-rays each, and each title will get three DVDs of supplements - essentially the same discs from the previous DVD releases of the trilogy.

Keep us posted if you notice the dreaded rumoured 'green tint' to Fellowship, or if the wankers at AVS are complaining about nothing.

Just saw where Best Buy also has a 100.00 Bluray set with 6 chess pieces from what looks like the same ones from the "Noble pewter Lotr chess set". Wierd that I can't find any extra info on this box set yet.

I guess they had extra pieces back in a wharehouse somewhere.

I just bought that chess set off Ebay a month ago. Now if the box set has two queens in it, it might be a welcomed set. But still 50.00 extra for two queens and then 4 others...I see a ring wraith, and maybe Gandalf and then some other figures. I might ride to BB and look closer.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

I watched it last night and I didn't really notice the green tint issue.

I did think it was a spectacular improvement over the Blu ray theatrical release. My wife was impressed as well and she doesn't usually care about such things.

So last night, while we were watching The Two Towers, my picture gradually got more and more dim. Tonight, we were watching Return Of The King... and right when Gollum hits the lava and the ring starts to sink, POP!
