Five + inches in less than a couple of hours. The parking lot for my office is a converging point for 2 creeks and 3 or 4 storm culverts. The water started rising rapidly. By the time I got down to the parking lot to move my car, the water was already just below my knees and within a fraction of an inch of overflowing the door rocker panel and flooding the interior (maybe a little above the level you see in the picture). I was able to get it started and moved. Several were not so lucky. I have attached a couple of photos. My car was parked next to the black SUV.

These pictures are AFTER the water has receded. The water was up to the roof of the cars. The car with the trunk ajar next to the tree...floated there. Every car you see in the picture was underwater and is probably a very costly repair. I was lucky to get my car out.

There were several roads that were under 3-4 feet of water as well. I've seen high water in this area before...but nothing like this.

A couple more photos from the area I live (I am fortunately on higher ground)

Holy crap, bet you had to creep your car out to keep from making a wake huh?

What a crazy weather year. We had snow Sunday, and it's suppose to be 78 today.

I ended up getting some water in the car when I got in and moved it. The water level was above the bottom of the door and I had to shut it to keep more water from coming in as the car was moving. When I shut the door I pulled a fair amount of water in the car. It's drying now...the next step will be to make sure it is sanitized well. I'm sure there was some sewer overflow in that water.

If you have a rug shampoo machine, I'd run that with some Lysol poured in with the cleaning agent.

I soaked it with disinfectant as soon as I vacuumed the water out. I will clean it again with a carpet cleaning machine and re-apply some more disinfectant. That should take care of it.

East TN. Knoxville. Oh and BTW...we are around 900' ABOVE sea level...so this wasn't low level flooding. It was too much water with not enough places to go fast enough. Any low area filled up quickly...but by the same token...most of the water receded quickly once the rain stopped.

wet carpets are a big no-no. you will most likely want to pull up the carpet and feel the pad underneath. highly recommend turning on your heater with the windows up for about 3 hours. in detailing i used to have to do this for tough to clean carpets that required extraction, and that really soaks the carpet down

Big rain like what you experienced always worries me as we are only a couple miles up from the beach and I sit at about 25' above sea level.

Back in the 80's we had some very heavy rains and the storm drains plugged up, some housing tracks next to mine flooded.

Glad you got your car out safely. Hopefully there were no injuries.

As for drying out your car. I'd park in the garage over the doors and run some fans all night long pointed inside the car. That will do the trick.

We have had a lot of flooding as well here in Ohio:frown: We do a lot of water restoration where I work and we have been extremely busy these past 2 days from the rain and the melting snow. I spent all day yesterday pumping water out of a college campus building basement.

we live in blue ridge, near the tri state marker where n.c. tenn. and ga. meet.

we kept seeing the reports of that line crossing over you guys, heading our way.

Thankfully, we just had sideways rain for about an hour, a little lightning, and some pretty stiff winds.

sorry to hear about you folks getting hit so hard.

i would seriously think about getting that carpet replaced, just my opinion.

Its really a potential health issue.

Wow. We had quite a bit of rain and some flooding but not to that extent here in Johnson City. My dad had more rain in the Kingsport area- it seemed like the mountains helped this time to sort of squeeze the front north of us. It looked bad on radar so I'm glad you got the car out ok.

Thanks for all the "drying" advice guys. There was probably not enough water to warrant some of the more extreme measures. I have it in the garage with a heater running right now. I may lift the carpet enough to get some circulation in there to make sure the mat gets dry. Avoiding mildew and disinfecting are my main objectives at this point.

I guess we shouldn't complain about that little snow storm we had yesterday. I wasted most of my evening blowing that evil white stuff away last evening. I had chute cable issue, flat tire issue and I would have felt like complaining about it but all considering, I'll STFU as I can see there is much worse than shoveling snow in the world . A wasted evening and little body pain is bening if you consider the trouble of flooding your car or your home (more pain, more money) :frown: I really feel for that kid on the roof of his pick-up truck

Here are a couple more camera phone pictures taken by someone in our office. We are on the 6th floor.

This is what it looked like as I went to get my car. It was parked just out of the frame over on the left-middle of the picture. That may even be me next to the guy with the blue and white umbrella. Too grainy to tell for sure.

    5490103031_fd3d3aa502_z.jpg

This is what it looked like about 20 minutes later. Notice the floating cars.

    5490103065_d4636fab3c_z.jpg

You can sort of see the problem in these pictures. There is a creek along the back side of the lot running along the tree line and parking garage. Also there is a creek between our building and the lot that you can clearly see in the first picture. Both of those feed into a single storm culvert that is no bigger that either of them. A definite recipe for problems during abnormal rainfall.

Notice on the middle left edge of the 2nd picture is a dark shape. That is (was) a nice looking black on black Honda Civic Si Coupe.

    2011-Honda-Civic-Si-Coupe.jpg

It was still there this afternoon and I took a look at it. The entire engine bay, wheel wells and underside were filled with debris. The formerly black interior was the brown color of the flood water...all the way over the headrests. A total loss I'm sure.

Lots of property damage. A buddy of mine that owns a towing service pull about 150 cars out of flood waters yesterday. Many homes and businesses were flooded. No deaths or serious injuries in the immediate area that I'm aware of. That is a good thing.

Wow Steve. I'm glad you were able to get out with relatively little damage. Are you planning to have a mechanic examine your car for hidden damage?

I ask because my girlfriend's car was involved in a similar type flood (in New Orleans) and water got inside the car and soaked the carpet on the driver's side as she was getting in. I dried out the carpet but she started having drivability problems a week or so after. It turned out there was an electronic control module under the carpet behind the driver's seat that had rusted. I had always thought those sorts of things were in the engine compartment or dash area (this was a Honda).
