opinion on velodyne sub

Rgr that GT Head.
To get back on topic, isn't the guy looking at *entry* level Velo's?
At the <$400 price point, Audio Adire Rava, Dayton Titanic Kit, or entry level VMPS / SVS Passives (add an amp). The HSU VTF is also a GREAT sub, but I think it comes in around $450.
Other than that, go straight DIY. Spending around $100 on a plate amp, and around $100 on a driver, you be able to run with (or better) than most anything retail, at twice or three times the price.

As far as the CH12 vs the PSW650, it's a toss up, It's going to come down to personal preference. -
the 650 is better for music but the 12 will be better for ht. the cht12 goes prety low but alot lower than the 650.

I agree with, ganzo; the problem is that most people do a little of each with their setups, so you're going to make some sort of compromise here.
I have to CT-120 in my home theater environment, and think it adds the visceral and house-shaking home theater aspect that it's supposed to. I also find the Polk subs to be more musical than my CT-120. Good luck.

I'm using Velodyne CHT-15" sub and the bass is so clear and transparent that you feel it and would never find where its coming from.
The sub performs very well both for movies and music. The bass I get is very tight and accurate. The sub has servo-sensing technology it never sounds boomy at all and shakes my room. Pure theatre bass. LOTR sounds amazing!
The extra 3 inches does make the big difference. 750watts, 300 RMS AMP Very heavy 83lbs, Beautiful appearance mate well and perfect match with all of my polks. Velodyne no.1 subwoofer company in the world.
The price I paid as an employee discount is a steal, $500 Canadian sells at $1200 Canadian.
Good luck!Panasonic TH-50PX80U Plasma HDTV

The CHT-15 does not have a true servo circuit that monitors cone or VC motion. That is reserved exclusively for the OOP HGS and new Digital Drive subs.
The CHT-15 does have a much less sophisticated current sensor that monitors when the amp is asked to deliver more power than the driver can safely handle and it ramps down the amp to protect the woof. I know Velo calls it a "Current Sensing Servo", but that does not mean it is a servo controlled subwoofer.
This is not to detract at all from the overall goodness of the CHT-15. It's a fine sub that plays loud and clean and deep and is a good buy at $500 American or less.

Thanks Doc, I must have made the mistake. It is current sensing servo technology which protects the driver.

now i'm tossing around the idea of saving up some money now for a svs sub since i keep on reading all the posts on them and how happy everyone is with their purchase. might as well finish off my ht system strong, and i love good, clean, deep bass. is the comparison between the velodyne and the svs like night and day?
with my setup, if i did decide to get one, should i get the pc+ 20-39? also, do they have subs at audio stores for demos, and if so which ones? in regards to the price on their website, is that pretty much the best price offered anywhere? -
SVS is internet direct only. The prices are fixed, except for special shipping on the PB2-ISD for a limited time, and B-Stock, which is about $50 off.
If you want to hear one, find an owner in your area via HTF, AVS, HT SPOT, Klipsch forum, or Club Polk. Also check Audio Envy for owners.
If you cruise over to the Klipsch website forum under Powered Subwoofers on Page 2, Dillon replaced a CT-150 with a PB2+. While hardly an equal price match-up, he is quoted as saying:
".....I can say with confidence that my CT-150 compares to the PB2 Plus like a Bose cube compares to a La Scala. It's really an unfair comparison."
As for the model that is best for you, please provide:
- room dimensions
- ceiling height
- describe any permanent openings and their location with respect to the proposed subwoofer location
- the distance from the proposed subwoofer location to the key listening positions
- your preferred playback volume for HT (moderate, loud, or REALLY room-shakingly loud)
- your listening tastes for music (mainly looking for source material with really deep subsonic content like pipe organ)
With that info, I can pin down a recommendation. Then you can take my recommendation to Tom/Ron/Erik at SVS and confirm before you pull the trigger.

thanks for your help doc, regarding the room information, right now i'm still living with my parents so my audio equipment is in my bedroom which isn't so big. however, in 2-3 years i plan on moving it into a typical family room size which is more important to me.
my room size is about 12'x10' and the ceiling is 8'. but like i said, i plan on moving my setup to a room about 20'x12' with a 10' ceiling in the future.
no permanent openings in my room now.
the key listening position right now is about 6' away from the sub position
my playback level - i like a lot of bass, but of course quality is most important, that is why i'm considering the sv subs. so the more the better
music - i like pretty much everything, the only low stuff i listen to would be rap but i'm not sure how low that goes, (i also noticed that a few tracks on the linkin park reanimation dvd-audio has a couple of really low notes in which my sub bottoms out) and again i love a lot of bass with my music when it's supposed to be there
so that's pretty much it for now, thanks again for your help -
For the future room, 20x12x10 = 2400 ft3. I'd buy a 25-31 PC+ or a 20-39PC+, or a PB2-ISD.
The 25-31 will pound a bit louder on rap, but the 20-39 will dig a bit deeper for HT. Either would be excellent in that size room.
The PB2-ISD will outperform either, but not by much. If you like the box, this is the model to get in the under $1,000 category.

SVS subs are only available online so they'd be hard to find and listen.
If you get chance before buying either SVS or Velodyne give a try to listen Velodyne CHT-12 or CHT-15 you'd be happy to hear Velo sub and let your ears be honest. Get whichever suits your needs and sounds good. SVS and Velodyne both make great subs and there are many more. Also remember a good A/V receiver also makes the huge difference. Bass management and proper calibration another is way to turn good sub into the better.Panasonic TH-50PX80U Plasma HDTV

Troy, go bench test something, will 'yeah'?
Hey, remember when Dan first proclaimed he had Rel in his 'sole' - allday allabout, and he didn't even know if the model he liked was ported or sealed? That about sums it up for me as far as the value of his opinions on subs (even though he has demoed thousands).
Funny post, I should look it up.

Russ, you really should share your angst with someone else. I KNOW that it's killing you that you aren't invited to "Dave's" *house* to listen to his *separates quality receiver* and his total *surround rig* on *Kimber wire*
