I have a 16' x 18' room with 8' ceilings ...carpeted floors.... and solid core entry door...two solidcore closet doors... with an 7'6" x 5' window on one wall...also i have 1/2" soundboard underneath 1/2" sheetrock on the walls and r-13 insulation in all 4 walls and r-30 insulation in the ceiling.....so my point being the room is tight .....now what size sub or subs should i be running for 95% ht alongside my modest set-up....

Of coarse big because you can always turn it down but you cant turn it up if you got all the way up allready .
ALSO you get a few free decibles if its in the cornor !
I suggest hear a few differant ones and go towards what you like . -
Doesn't somebody here say something like ,"you'll rarely hear anyone say I wish I had gotten less Sub".

Currently got a mirage bps150i and it does ok most of the time but when I'm watching blu rays and the big explosion scenes happen it just doesn't sound realistic.....even muddy at times on the really low stuff ....is that because it isn't enough sub ??Budget 5.1 H.T. Oh my wife hates the one I have .....but I'm more concerned about the realness of the bass I want it to sound like an explosion when I'm watching 2012 and not just an extremely loud **** !!!!!Budget 5.1 H.T. Get the biggest baddest sub you can afford. Figure out your max budget and add $500. You'll thank me later....

What he said.
It does come down to what your budget can afford....so how much can you scrounge up from the couch cushions?

This is how I did it... Tell the fiancee that I'm going to spend X on a new sub, then double X, thats how much sub you need to spend. See what she'll greenlight (in my case around 300), so now i'm in the $600.00 range...

Nm I just spent 410 on an adcom 7605 ......next purchase will definately be a sub though .....my budget is most likely gonna be around 4-500 dollars so I should add 500 to that puts me at about 850-1000 lol I gotta a lot of pan handling to do .....I may be able to get a couple hundred for the mirage ....I dunnoBudget 5.1 H.T. You'll need to factor in how much shipping will cost - cuz the bigger the sub, the bigger the shipping bill will be.
You may want to consider used...keep an eye over on audiogon.com for a used deal.
Or watch for deals where you get shipping free (could happen on bigger subs, but not likely).
Enjoy the problem - consider it a quest for the best!

I thought that was a joke at first, but they're really serious. They're statements aren't exactly accurate though. The Exodus Maelstrom 21, for example, is flat down to 10 Hz at a higher output in an infinite baffle configuration. Finding an amp that will output anything at 1 Hz will be tricky too. But still, I'd be interested in "hearing" one at least for kicks and giggles. Downside, especially around here, would be having a fan blowing in and out of my attic during the summer. Either way, it's still a bit of genius. Mad genius, but genius none the less.Turntable: Empire 208

So, for 'professional installation' in either roof or basement....is there additional duct work to vent the sound into the listening area?
I saw the fan/woofer rotating in the ad - but where does it go?

you'd have to loop the air in and out of the theater room or you'll be drawing outside air into your living space.Main Surround -

That's not how they show it configured. They specifically say it has to use the attic to acheive an infinite baffle configuration. And in an infinite baffle configuration, I'd take a Maelstrom 21" @ flat to 10 hz and only 4-5 db down at 5 Hz, depending on room.Turntable: Empire 208

Ok, so where does the fan blow and where does it exit?

back to the topic at hand...that mirage really is a pretty killer sub UNLESS you want to pressurize the room. It is a GREAT 2 channel sub, and solid for the vast majority of ht. I loved mine, actually sold it on audiogon for $300, and I think that it well worth that. So if its in good condition I think that you can get at least 200 for it, and up to 300 if its in really good shape and you find the right buyer. So I think that you can safely add that to the budget.Living Room 2.2: Usher BE-718 "tiny dancers"; Dual DIY Dayton audio RSS210HF-4 Subs with Dayton SPA-250 amps; Arcam SA30; Musical Fidelity A308; Sony UBP-x1000es

I second Ben's suggestion on the Titanic. I've got a pair of em myself
I'm sure there are better out there for more money, but these have been the best I've experienced in my home <$1000. And at ~$750 on the current sale, I think that's a killer deal.design is where science and art break even. -

It blows into and out of the room, since the blades reverse their pitch.Turntable: Empire 208

Hmm...sounds expensive to do the install and put ducting from the attic (or basement) to where the HT room is. How would you even do that for a 2-story home with the HT room on the bottom floor - run ducting outside the house?

keep the sub you have and add another. More is better in my opinion. The three i have fill the room quite nicely.. LOL,, nicely, now what kind of word is that when it comes right down to punch you in the chest, head, stomach BASS! Oh yea baby!Yamaha rx-a2000 AVR

I would suggest dual SVS PB-12NSD DSP's, or dual PB12+ DSP's. Either one of those would fit the bill quite nicely. Another option would be dual Epik Empires as well."....not everything that can be counted counts, and not everything that counts can be counted." I think the general rule of thumb is the sub must be at least the size of your refrigerator~

For 95% HT you can't beat SVS for the money. I would recommend you buy used to stretch your dollar.

For something prefabbed sure, but there are some DIY solutions out there that can.
edit: just saw your budget... no clue how I missed it Personally, I'd go with a DIY kit like the Dayton kit mentioned earlier. It's slightly over your budget, but you can't beat the bang-for-your-buck of any DIY kit. Plus you want something that's a one-and-done solution, not something that will hold you over for a while until you can afford something else.- Computer Rig -
