Sacd and dvd audio failed. Hi res music doesn't appeal to the general market. But that doesn't mean they can't release the 24 bit version of what has been recorded.
Digital music should replace the cd in all forms. From what I have learned , a heard drive can outperform any cd transport. You can store instead of hand changing your music.
I believe anywhere you buy your music it should be a copy of the original. Then if you are going to replay that file on a lower res system , it just down grades it, not from the start.
Why must we live in a world where down graded anything is except able?

My personal quest is to save to world of bad audio, one thread at a time.

Those are only necessary if you are using fans to cool your PC's internal components, as fans are notorious contributors of electrical and mechanical noise to the signal path. A far superior solution is to eliminate the fans by submerging your PC in Crisco, at least until MIT gets around to making SATA interconnects.

lol. or you can go liquid cooling. If you're not overclocking, you can pretty much shut off all the fans (case, radiator). About the only thing that would need to run is the water pump. hell even overclocked, if I'm not encoding blu-ray -> x264, I pretty much shut down everything except the giant window fan.

That's no good, the pump's still got a motor. Crisco FTW!!!

Not sure if this is posted elsewhere, but all this talk about 24bit recordings on iTunes made me look into the latest on their N.C. data center...funny enough, they're rumored to go live sometime this spring.

My hope? 24 bit download options for the good stuff/keeper music, and a subscription based model for the background stuff! (all at a reasonable cost, of course... otherwise I'm sticking with CDs/LPs).

    http://www.appleinsider.com/articles/11/02/23/apple_says_nc_data_center_will_support_itunes_and_mobileme_this_spring.html

As much as I'm tired of Apple's greater-then-thou attitude on pretty much everything, I get excited about these things. We all benefited from them bullying the recording industry in the early part of the last decade...hope they can keep it up.
