I'm partial to John Wayne for Westerns:
She Wore a Yellow Ribbon
The Cowboys
Rio Bravo
I do like Mackenna's Gold as a non-John Wayne movie.
Oh - and Clint Eastwood in Joe Kidd - I love the scene where he sets up that incredibly long rifle shot!
H9: If you don't trust what you are hearing, then maybe you need to be less invested in a hobby which all the pleasure comes from listening to music. -

If you mean The good the bad, and the ugly,, Im hearing ya,,
That's probably the best of the series, but I also like the other 2 as well. Fstfull of Dollars is my second favorite, and I don't even mind the remake with Bruce Willis too much... -

A couple more of my favorites are Unforgiven and you know you can't get through a thread about westerns without someone mentioning Tombstone, although I'm not sure that either those strictly qualify as Westerns...

I'm not even a huge fan of the genre, but Once Upon a Time in the West and The Wild Bunch are both fantastic.I never had it like this where I grew up. But I send my kids here because the fact is you go to one of the best schools in the country: Rushmore. Now, for some of you it doesn't matter. You were born rich and you're going to stay rich. But here's my advice to the rest of you: Take dead aim on the rich boys. Get them in the crosshairs and take them down. Just remember, they can buy anything but they can't buy backbone. Don't let them forget it. Thank you.Herman Blume - Rushmore

Quigley Down Under.
Not exactly a "western" but it is about an American "cowboy" going to Australia and hired to shoot aborigines. He takes exception and walks off. Of course, thay can't just go find someone else, they have to kill this guy g'all durn it! So they chase after him and stuff happens.
But Tom Selleck sitting on a horse and picking off dudes like 2 miles away with his rifle. Bad ****.
Not really my favorite "western" though. As a movie, it's not great. It's not bad either but it's not so super duper I can't stand it. I don't know if I have a favorite.
I mean, I like "Young Guns" and alot of other people I know tell me it's garbage and I'm nuts for liking it.
But I also consider "Firefly" and the ensuing movie "Serenity" to be westerns even though they were in space.Expert Moron Extraordinaire

I definitely wouldn't consider myself a western connoisseur, I've really only seen a handful outside of Sergio Leone's. I love all Leone films and of course the classic soundtracks by Ennio Morricone.
Since it is quite possibly my favorite film of all time I have to pick The Good, the Bad and the Ugly as my favorite western. Of course the man with no name films are all classic westerns along with Once Upon a Time in the West, but I find that Duck You Sucker (aka A Fistful of Dynamite aka Once Upon a Time the...Revolution) is right up there with his best. The main theme for Dynamite is my favorite Morricone piece I've heard thus far, give it a listen.
As far as newer westerns has anyone seen the Australian based "the Proposition"? One of the best movies I've seen lately.2 channel:

Love that one as well, it practically defines the genre. Almost everyone has heard it in some form or another regardless if they've seen the movie. I just picked up the soundtrack from my local record store. After giving it a spin I'd say my favorite would have to be 'Il Triello' the part that plays during the standoff, one of the most intense scenes in all of cinematic history, Ennio's score is brilliant in the way it keeps the tension so high, don't think Leone could have pulled off that scene otherwise.

Fistful of Dollars and The Magnificent Seven for classics (Haven't seen The Wild Bunch, I definitely need to get around to that.)
For more recent ones, The Unforgiven, and the True Grit remake wasn't half bad either. Jeff Bridges just plain kicks ****.
