TV Riser 2. Anybody ever use one?

I was wondering if anybody has used a Tv Riser 2 by Wood Technology. It is a shelf that you set on top of your entertainment center or tv stand. It has a 23x8x17 cubby hole that you can put a center channel in. It wont fit a 6A center channel but a 4A should fit fine.

What do you think?

My tv stand now is only 19 inches tall so the tv could probably be ok lifted up another 8 inches. The bottom of the Tv screen is around 24 inches off the ground. The tv stand just has a single shelf and 2 drawers. I had to cut 1 inch off the back side to be able to slide my onkyo 808 in.

Here is an amazon link and pic

Not my pics. They were on amazon too.

I was faced with a similar dilemma. I just hung my set on the wall with a $30 bracket, and poof... instant center shelf.

You can make one for half the amazon price.

Also, there are some great stands now that have a support up the back to mount your tv above everything....WalMart has some really decent ones for less than $200.

I cant hang a tv on the wall. I just rent my appartment and wouldn't want to put large holes in the sheetrock / drywall.

I might look at the wal mart tv stand.

I would be able to make one if I was closer to my inlaws or my parients. I dont have the tools to do it here at my home. Finding hard wood board 1in thick by 17 inches wide is kind of difficult. I might check with a lowes, and home depot. Maybe they sell hard wood boards that have alread been joined / glued together for that wide width. It wouldn't have to be a single board wide.

Lowes has 1"thick 11.5" x 4ft oak stair treads for around $20. Not as deep as your looking for, but very solid. You could probably get them to make the cuts you need.

Nice set up. But that Onkyo needs more breathing room...IMO. Those babies get HOT. Very hot! I have a foot and a half of space over mine.

I havent noticed it getting to hot. If it does I can take the bottom out of the drawer above it. That would give it quite a bit more room.

Mount it to the wall.. You can just mud the holes when you move out.

I agree with that. You will just have four 1/4" holes to fill with mud.

I wouldn't ever put something like a TV on a shelf that has no cross support.

If the shelf in the OP had a connection between the two vertical 'legs' then I'd be fine, but if that thing so much as tilted too much, goodbye TV and whatever else below it.

I need to get something similar to raise my TV to accomodate my surroundbar, but it's got to have some strength.

I have seen folks mount the RTI centers on the wall mount shelf with no problems.

Heck he's got space above the TV. 2 L brackets and a cheap shelf later and hes golden.

If he needs to tilt the speaker get some Auralex MOPAD Monitor Isolation Pads and call it a day

So when I made the point, I specifically said that my comments were geared towards having a TV (aka something that's not light as a feather) on a support that has no cross support.

Last time I checked, a center channel doesn't weigh what a TV does.........

My apologies. I mis-read/skimmed your post and obviously missed the intent (which I now see).

You don't have to drill large holes to mount it on the wall.

Just get two solid pieces of wood (I used wood flooring), then use 4 long wood screws and go into the studs. Now you have a solid anchor, so you can then mount into the wood. If your mount happens to line up with the studs, you can do that too. When its time to leave, you've got four holes slightly bigger than those created to hang pictures

Here is the solution to your problem

    http://www.salamanderdesigns.com/whatsnew/index.jsp

Do not use that crappy TV stand. This will give you a real gear stand with a center channel shelf and you can get the one that suits your gear now and maybe get one that has some room for gear in the future.

If you check out the Synergy line , they have build your own cabinets that can grow into more as they are modular.

I went a head and ordered the TV Riser. If it was my place and perminant I would just mount the tv on the wall. I am probably to nice of a tenant.

Wall mounted tv with that pro audio rack would be pretty slick.

I think my tv's spec sheet says it weighs 89 lbs.

I built my own once. I spent a lot of time & money since my display at the time was a big old CRT weighing nearly 200lbs. I was proud of my creation, it looked great. However, that's where the happiness ended. Made the center sound like it was in a cave. Vocals sounded tubby. It was a big disappointment. Since I had put so much effort into it, I used it for awhile, but ultimately ended up tossing it in favor of a dedicated stand in front of the display. Hope your experience is better.

I can see where that can happen. I plan on having the grill sticking out a little instead of having the speaker pushed clear back in, under the tv. I just didn't want the look of the speaker sitting in front of the tv.

It works great and sound the same as having it just sitting in front of the tv. I dont have it fully recessed. The grill sticks out of the cubby hole a little. That way it isnt sunk clear back in.
