Hello everybody, my name is Charlie and I came across this site searching for some speakers that were listed here in the classifieds. This looks like a really great site! I'd just like to introduce myself, I'm from Seattle and 18 years old and will be moving off to college next year. I've applied to a whole bunch of places but won't hear back from them until April or so. I've been playing saxophone (first alto, then tenor) for about 8 years now in the Garfield High School jazz band and I just love music. I've never listened to many polk speakers but maybe I'll become a fan. :)

I really want to go into meteorology. However, I'm also really interested in music (obviously) and play jazz at my local high school - here's a video from our latest concert, I'm the first tenor soloist. I will play a lot of music in high school, maybe do a minor in jazz.

I'm currently interested in some usher be-718s that I can get for 1500 or less, really expensive sure, but I have a ton of money saved up and just love listening to music. I've applied to Stanford, Columbia, UPenn, Northwestern, Columbia, Williams, and UW, and I will be applying to the University of Oklahoma, University of Miami, and University of British Columbia. I'm very excited for college! Any survival tips?

    Welcome to CP!

and take all the chances and things you want to do in college do them. You will have some sleepless nights, nights thinking you are going to fail the final the next day to find that it was easier than you thought, and just a great time that goes by way too fast even though when you get there it feels like somedays just drag on.

I just graduated college not all that long ago and going back for my masters in about a year or so. Good luck, stay focused, but also have some fun while your at it.

and trust me, when you start working after college, a part of you just wants to go back because even though test suck, you still get a good amount of freedom as well (compared to being stuck in a cublical for 9-12 hours a day).

Much more rampant in college though, and most are not "wise to the game" yet.

Bob hit the nail in the head; you'll never find an environment as target rich as college.

And welcome to the club Charlie. Good luck on school. Honestly, the best tip is to just go to class VERY consistently. If you go to class, take studious notes and then study a tiny bit outside of class, you can do well.

My first 2 years at NC State were an abject failure b/c I never went to class. I quit before being "excused" by the university.

I finished at another school and had a 3.64 at completion, almost solely b/c I decided to make myself go to class everyday.

Welcome and good luck with college next year. We are planning a local get-together this spring I think, and you would be very welcome to come and join us and listen to all the equipment that will be present. It's a fun time, and a great way to meet other enthusiasts and check out different stereo components.

The best tip is simple math. go to class = better grades = better job = better money = better women. You are paying for class, so don't waste your money.

Besides, at that age you have the stamina to work hard all week and play hard all weekend!

Yes..My Dear Old Departed Dad pulled me aside one day shortly before I left to go out on my own...he told me life would be grand if I just did my duty, had fun with as many girls as possible and above all,

Go Greek if it is available at your school. Being in a good Fraternity means instant family/social life and having a home away from home. It ain't all about partying either though there is definitely some of that. It's running a business, being in a democratic organization and taking on leadership roles.

And then there are the women!!!!!!!!!

Welcome to the forum. You will find there are a lot of great people here that range from your age or younger, to old guys like myself. There is a lot of knowlege about audio here, so feel free to take advantage of it.
Now to the important stuff, which is helping you to spend some of that money. At the very least, you will need a good 2 channel set up for your dorm room. And yes,I am going to suggest some polk speakers. Until you actually have your dorm room and know the layout it will be difficult to make any informed decisions. That said, maybe getting your ears on some polks would be a good place to start.

Anyway, your at an exciting crossroad in your life, I'm sure you'll do well.

    When I was 17 I wanted a pair of SDA SRS 1.2TL's but I didn't have $3500.00 :(

I bought a pair of SDA CRS+'s as shown here: http://www.PolkCRS.com/

They would be Great for a Dorm room!

Then when you are done with college you get a pair of 1.2TL's like mine: http://www.PolkSRS.com/

    Lasareath

    Welcome to this club.

Please get you a set of those SDA-CRS's with the one tweeter syling like Sal did and he suggests. Get the interconnecting cable too. They will reward your college years with some of THE BEST smaller room acoustic showings. Monitor 5or 5jr. will be awsome also or even monitor 7 from the vintage years are unbelievable!!. There are plenty of other newer POlks to choose from for sure and highly reviewd. But if you see any of these OLDER specimens out there,Please do yourself a miracle and purchase this designers vision of excellence in audio. You will probably never regret buying any Polks. The S6/8/ and others in that line have lightweight cabinets but still sound pretty well.

    Good luck to you.
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.
