Cell phones are located via triangulation based on the particular towers that can "see" them. It has nothing to do with the GPS function embedded in the phone. What non-smartphone has GPS?

They used to use triangulation. Since 911 they have been pushing GPS. It is not labeled under GPS necessarily and many times can be found under 911 settings whether it is a smart phone or not.

No need for a phone. All you have to do is drive through an intersection with a camera in it,drive by an atm,go through a drive through,OnStar, web bot to monitor traffic to a particular site, and the list goes on and on. Sooooooooo easy to find out anything about anyone (except for Obama's birth certificate or Bushs' military record, lol). If one was to worry about all the things that go bump in the night we would all need to be on meds. Wait, half of America is. Kinda like having an alarm system on your house......good for nothing really. Just lets you know someone is breaking in. Key word, IN. If someone wants something of yours it's for the taking, gun or not. One can only hope for stupid criminals.

Why do you think phones that can't run apps have GPS:wink: It's for tracking.

what phone are you thinking of that has gps but does not have the ability to use gps software, either downloaded or provided by the phone company? Moreover, how they gonna track it when its off? a gps receiver eats battery... which is why I find it hard to believe there is some conspiracy to track us using gps (i'm just guessing here though). You'd know if it was on.

Did I ever say it was a conspiracy? I just wanted to let people know that their photo's are most likely tagged with GPS data. Also I know that a lot of cell calls to at least 911 are tagged with GPS info. Do they use triangulation to track active calls still? Most likely if they don't have the GPS info. Does GPS have to be running all the time for GPS to track a call. I doubt it. I am sure they can figure out how to turn on the GPS when needed to find the call location in the phones software, and then turn it off.
    Enjoy.

Sorry, didn't mean it that way. Yes, I do wonder what abilities they have as far as turning on your gps remotely. Surely it can be done, I am just wondering at what level are they able to do this (if at all). Is a special warrant required, does a special department have to handle it, do all PD's have this ability? I'm sure someone could hack certain phones, but the ability to turn on gps on the wide array of devices out there would seem to imply cooperation with the cell phone companies.... so , again, i don't know.

Also, as far as being tracked by the general public, gps shouldn't be a concern.

I think it is turned on by the software on your phone when you place a 911 call. Who knows if it is turned on for all calls. Also a lot of phones have it on by default. I am sure if they wanted to remotely turn on GPS they could have that feature mandated into phones, cars, or anything else they put a GPS unit into. I don't see this in the near future. As for warrants I don't think they need one to find your location.

I gotta side with Ben on this one, lots of phones have GPS that don't use them for the standard GPS stuff, but rather for geolocation in emergencies and such. It was a big story SEVERAL years ago, this is not new stuff. Read up on E911 regulations.

And depending on tower layout and whatnot, triangulation can be pretty imprecise.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.
