Big Trouble In Little China is freakin awesome... totally worth the purchase on Blu-Ray, a lot better than any other transfer I've seen of that movie.

Jack Burton is just one of the best characters in all of cinema. He's easily better than other characters at five times his rated power.

2001: A Space Odyssey! The film was way ahead of its time in storyline and effects. Most realistic to date without all the CGI. I wish I could have seen it in Cinerama!

I'm probably showing my age, but I did see 2001 at the Cinerama in Hartford, Connecticut in 1968. My first experience with widescreen and surround sound!

I was still in high school but I clearly remember the Excorcist hysteria. My older brother and my mom went to see it in the theater and mom said I'd never be old enough to watch it. When I finally did see it on VHS several years later I understood all the hype. It almost seems tame now but it changed that genre of movies in a profound way. However I have to agree that it's not true sci-fi. My pick for that if I only had one to choose would be Alien. It was just so intense.

I should have included that one. It was brilliant. I loved the documentary style because it gave it verisimilitude.

A lot of SF movies don't work very hard to help you suspend your disbelief.
And sometimes the science really stinks - like the one where they went to the center of the earth to blow up nuclear warheads to save the earth. Somehow it is thousands of degrees outside their vehicle and the pressure is tons per square inch and they are perfectly comfortable. Not to mention how much power would be needed to move.

Cannot speak with any authority as to which is best.
My favorite is probably Silent Running.
The most beautiful sci-fi, by far (by my estimation), Kubrick's 2001: A Space Odyssey

Technology, space and time are the stars of the latter movie. The humans are virtually an afterthought.

    +1.

Initially I was disappointed after 1st viewing on DVD rental, but after HD viewing I like it.

    I hope Blomkamp makes a "District 10".

One I haven't seen on the list - Brazil. A bit dated maybe, but pretty engaging.
