+1 for Blade Runner (the Blu-Ray transfer is pretty freakin phenomenal). Also love Forbidden Planet and the original The Day the Earth Stood Still. Going all the way back to pre-talkies, Metropolis is very cool... too bad they haven't been able to put together a complete copy as yet.

    The original.

Which three books would you have taken?
Most people just listen to music and watch movies. I EXPERIENCE them.

Close call, but I'd give 2001: A Space Odyssey a slight nod over Blade Runner.

I like The Day the Earth stood still. But I did get to see the latest Metropolis with 147 minutes of film. They found more footage and it is the most complete version yet. It was with a symphonic soundtrack instead of the 80 rock soundtrack I heard last. Great film!

2001: A Space Odyssey! The film was way ahead of its time in storyline and effects. Most realistic to date without all the CGI. I wish I could have seen it in Cinerama!

    The Exorcist.

Not many films got people running out of the theaters crying, or kneeling down praying in the lobby. You had to be there. Powerful stuff.

No way, man. That's horror, not sci-fi. But your suggestion did remind me to expand my initial list to include Not Of This Earth starr... er, let's say "featuring" Traci Lords. And also They Live with Rowdy Roddy Piper giving the best ad-libbed piece of dialogue in any sci-fi/horror/thriller ever. Double Jeopardy bonus points to anyone who can quote his line.

I remember going to phipps plaza in atlanta to see the exorcist.

We got there to see a huge crowd of people in two lines waiting for two showings away, about a four hour wait, some playing backgammon, eating pizza or napping.

For FOUR hours we heard screaming and shrieking from inside the two theaters, each showing the exorcist.

From time to time people would come out crying, some had actually vomited.

Needless to say after four hours of this, we were absolutely shaking when we were let in at about midnight for our showing.

Obviously, we were undergoing great mental stress, brainwashing is not the right term, but believe me george grand has it right, to be there back then, in that hysterical environment, the effect was enough to make me close my eyes once or twice as the camera headed back up those steps towards that little girls room.

Something no other movie has ever come close to doing, and not even subsequent showings i watched of the exorcist had nearly that effect.

Like many things we of the seventies experienced, you shoulda been there.

If you werent, you really would not understand about a lot of things.

Dudes, I agree the Exorcist is an awesome and truly freaky movie, and I'm sure with all the drugs you 70's guys were eating back then it was even freakier , but it's just not in contention. It's not a sci-fi movie. It's like if someone asked you what is your favorite flavor of ice cream and your answer was puttanesca.

I was afraid someone was going to come back with that. Ok, here's another analogy that everyone can agree on... It's like if someone asked you what is your favorite flavor of beer and your answer was Watermelon Wheat. Clearly, some things just don't belong in a given category.

We now resume our regularly scheduled cinematic discussion.

Nice little John Carpenter film... One of my Sci-Fi guilty pleasures.

Are you referring to the bubblegum line?

Give the man a cigar! I love that line.

John Carpenter did make some good, bad movies in the 80's. My personal guilty pleasure is Prince of Darkness, although there's not really any hot chicks in that one, unless you count Jameson Parker.

I think we need a separate thread so we can pick the best John Carpenter movie.
