Which receiver would you pick and why?

Let's say there are ONLY two choices-
Sony STR-DA2ES
Onkyo TX-SR606
All-in-one HT setup using SDA 2a's as the mains. It has to sound great for music, but also has to be the setup for movies, etc. and be upgradeable.
Thoughts or experience on either??

Tough call. The Sony has outdated technology. It's only a 6.1 channel Dolby/DTS receiver with no HDMI or new Sound codex processing, etc. However it probably has more POWER and better sound? It also has pre-outs for adding external amps. The Onkyo does not.
However the Onkyo has HDMI IN/OUT and video upscaling (I think to 1080i) and can process new 7.1 HD sound formats (both Dolby-HD, and DTS HD, etc.
What are you going to use the receiver for? What other equipment do you have?

This is the dilemna. It will pull equal duty for my old vinyl and cd's, but will also be the main source for the tv and movie watching. I'm embarrassed to admit we're still watching a 32" tube tv, so that will be the next upgrade (not right away). The other components I have are a Kenwood Model 1050CD 5- disc changer, and the turntable is a Technics SL-D2. Center speaker is a Yamaha NS-AC141. No sub or surrounds hooked up as of yet. I'm the type that only upgrades when a cheap buy or trade presents itself (a bit of a treasure-hunter in that regard).
Thanks for replying. -
Well, that partially answers your question. The ONKYO has NO phono section. The Sony, I'm pretty sure does? You obviously need that.
Pricing is also important? You can always get a Blu-ray that decodes HD formats internally and sends them out via 5.1 analog outs. I'm pretty sure the Sony has 5.1 analog inputs so that would give you the NEW surround formats off the Sony receiver for ONE SOURCE...a Blu-ray Player?

Onkyo 608 anyday
I owned a 607 and the performance was awesome with great 2 ch stereo for a budget receiver -
Good point on the phono.
They are both trades deals so no money in play. I forgot (DUH!) about my PS3 for Blu-Ray and the Wii which are currently connected.

Thanks Farmboy. I'd heard that the Onkyos sound great, but I thought some early models had some kind of HDMI problem. I don't have any experience personally, so I appreciate the input.

I would go with the Onkyo... listened to both of those previously and the Onkyo had a better sound to my ears.

The Sony will sound much better , it has a awesome amp section in that model. Out of date but if you don't need HDMI switching then get the Sony. 2 channel will smoke the Onkyo.Dan

Did you just recommend him something that wasn't one of the choices?
I'd choose the Sony. Its power will rock the Onkyo hands down.Main Surround -

Sony all the way (did I just say that?) Pre-outs, phono input... I've got a DA1ES in the closet that I'm waiting to find another use for. Solid gear...
