SDA-2B Reoccuring Tweeter Blowout problem

Hi Everybody,

I am about to buy my third tweeter for my left SDA-2Bs.

I just recently bought the last tweeter just before Christmas last year.
Why does this keep happening?

Could this be a crossover problem?

Any help would be much appreciated.

    How much fun is that?

    Why isn't the right side being blown too?

    Does Polk offer any warrantee on their replacement parts?
    That's where I bought it.

    I blew my RT35i tweeter. Preamp problem.

    Because preamp was too small or because of actual amp problem?
    What kind of preamp was it?
    I suppose a separate would help.

    I am using a Pioneer Elite for a preamp.

    I have 3 adcom amps. I ran them at about 103-105db in 5 channel stereo. The main amp THD LEDs were lighting up such. Only the main amps. The amp clipped. So A couple days later, same thing, so i rewire the amps, and the distortion left that amp and went to the amp I switched to the main spot. Same thing occured. The MAIN amp clipped. So the PE sends a dirty signal to the mains at a certain volume.

    This very well could be your problem. Could be that at high volumes your speakers are getting alot of Distortion.

    Yeah, I guess the volume thing is pretty obvious.

    But the doesn't make sense part is that the amp (like yours) is sending a dirty signal to your separates at certain volume no matter what (even good amps like yours) you are using.

    So using separates is no longer an option?
    Geez, I was just on e-bay looking for an amp to take the heat off while waiting for another response. *Adcom GFA-5500* ~$425!!

    Another surprising part is that the volume lately has seemed almost limitless since the recent (4/03) addition of the SVS.

    No, it only sends a bag signal at extremely loud volumes. Not all receivers will do that. I would suggest getting seperates. Just make sure you have preouts on your receiver. The Adcom is nice. Go for it!

    If you are turning the volume past 12 noon, then that's too much, period!

    Have you had the right tweeter shut down at all, but not the left one? If so, then you do have a problem with the left thermal overload device. The 2B's have this to protect the tweeters from frying, it's on the crossover board and is easy to replace.

    Your speakers are long out of warranty, but Polk can probably sell you the part or at least tell you what you need.

    No, left has always been the "problem" tweeter.
    In fact the right is still the original.
    I figured, hey why replace it if it isn't broke, dismaying all slightly different tweeter designs that may lead to different sound.

    Still I am still considering a separate.
    Have been for a while.

    What do you think, the Adcom or a Carver TFM-35 for $300?
    Adcom ends in an hour.

    I don't think you understood my question. The tweeters are suppose to shut down before frying. I asked if the right one has ever shut down......gone into protection mode? I believe you're frying the left one because your protection device in the left speaker has failed. On a side note, you should replace the right tweeter to match the new replacement type you have in the left speaker.

    No, the right one has never clipped.
    Sorry, "no" was what I meant when I wanted to say that it has never clipped.
    The replacement tweeter that I used is the SL-2000, but from what I understand there are some slight differences, never mind that age question.
    This time I will buy two. I couldn't stop thinking about it last time I called and ordered. She said "Do you want two" and I paused and gave the wrong response. Then of course the crossover. Unless it's something that can be just snapped out and replaced on the board. It's been years since I've saudered anything!

    Also, it's hard to tell what is 12 o'clock on the Yammie. Digital output. But if you could convert 12 o'clock into digital and say past half-way then I would say oh yeah all the time. Which is ~-40 db on their scale. Normal tv listening is probably -50db which IS half way and is really not that loud by my standards.
    As you can tell, I don't have a sound pressure meter.

    Been spending the last few hours reading about equal power distribution to all speakers.

    I haven't done any unequal power demos, but the "using same power all the way around" theory, and practice in some cases, make more sense to me.
    I don't think it's a question of equal power requirements, I would belive that it's about matching amp sound.
    Plus, I'm the kinda guy that even if the theory of using the same power all the way around exists it would bug the **** out of me.
    I worry about it with speakers (tweeter matching), why wouldn't I worry about it with amps?
    Maybe it's a good thing that I lost that auction.
    I had a small battle going too!
    I made some poor guy loose close to $50.

    Again, no actual experience just theory.

    I run 100 watts to my mains. 60 watts to surround and center. Adcom makes amps that sound alike. No worries. Different speakers need different power.

    Contact Ken Swaugger at Polk CS for a copy of the SDA troubleshooting guide. It's a series of VOM tests that will ID any issue in your SDA's.

    That said, it is possible that you are overdriving your Yammie and more power might help, but before I went that route, I'd troubleshoot the speakers.
