If I walked in with an iphone and came out with different screws in it, I'd start a **** storm over it. That's pretty stupid.

Then again, thats why I dont buy apple products.

I'm shocked! Apple should have been doing this a long time ago. They've been a closed, controlling entity ever since I can remember. I only use apple when my client requires it.

Owning hardware doesn't do much good if you don't/cannot own the software - and the latter is increasingly the case with all media. Consumers today are (inexplicably, from my perspective) thrilled to go from owning content to buying a license to use it.

There are no conventions or standards like:

"Products must be designed so users can open and disassemble them."
"Products must be sealed with ****-type screw or a certain type of glue."

I don't get the basis of this complain. (Ok, I know why y'all are annoyed, but you know what I meant by examples above). Just by the $2 screwdriver and move on. What are you gonna do once it's opened anyway?

Moreover, there are a HECKUVA lot more to complain about on the software/ecosystem side.

Car manufacturers have been doing this for years, especially on the newer cars (i.e. bmw). It will take a whole lot of like 2-3 days for these "special" screw drivers "made in China" to appear on ebay.

it's not that bad...they switched to torx (plus?) a few months ago. If you brought your phone in to a store for repair, they would automatically switch out to torx screws. Now they're swtiching to pentalobe, presumably for the same reason....decrease the likelihood that the average joe tries to replace their screen they broke because they thought it was a good idea to juggle it while running down the street.

As mentioned already, the tools are readily available...and as it becomes more prevalent, the tools will be cheaper.

And let's be honest, with the type of people buying iPhones these days (read: this doesn't include anyone on CP...), they don't want the average joe trying to replace the screen with the cheap e-bay replacement screen, break something in the process, and then go straight to Apple and complain. I can only imagine how often that happens.

Also, I wonder if this has anything to do with the crummy budget iphone accessories on the market. I can't think of any other product that has spurred production of more cheaply made but still overpriced crud. Apple has to be getting sick of people using these pieces, having problems with the equipment, and complaining to Apple. If you open up almost any piece of consumer-grade electronics to do work on your own, you break the manufacturer warranty. The difference with most of the mods that happen on stuff that we like is that most people trying this A) aren't noobs, B) replace with higher quality parts that aren't likely to break faster than stock parts, and C) take care of their stuff to begin with (i.e. no juggling/running).

Of course, all this would be a moot issue if Apple would just sell replacement screens themselves...at a reasonable price. IMO, that is something to complain about, not the issue of trying to make it hard for people to open up their products.

It seems Apple has a strong enough demand for their products that they can do whatever they want and people will still buy their wares like crazy.

Would be interesting to fight Apple for your original screws. You did buy them afterall.

I was unaware that anyone was forced to buy Apple products against their will.

Seems to me if you don't like Apple's business model...don't buy the the stuff. There ARE alternatives.

This isn't the type of thing I would stop buying their product for, but it does amaze me the lengths people will go to defend every decision of theirs.

Jobs, just recently took medical leave from Apple, so as mentioned your wish has been granted. I'd hate to see something happen to the guy as with all things you don't wish bad things on people. I'm curious as to what will happen with Apple if something does actually happen to Jobs. For awhile I suspect they would continue on, but in the end, I think the innovation would slowly die down.

A tad off topic from your driver needs, I agree that sucks. My post was related to some thoughts I had since learning he is probably suffering with a terminal illness.

I'm not an Apple user per se. I only own 2 iPods. My family loves Apple and Macs. My wife has an iPhone and and iPad. My oldest daughter has an iPhone, iPad and a Macbook pro and a couple of iPods. My youngest has an iPhone, Macbook and an iPod. I'm a PC user...not a Mac. My phone is a Pantech. I don’t particularly like Quicktime or iTunes. So what is the purpose of all this?

I admire Steve Jobs. In the mid 70s I was in college majoring in business with a minor in computer science. Punching cards and feeding a stack of them into a reader and waiting until you got back a pile of "greenbar" to see if your program worked like it should have. I remember how great it was when the university actually got some DEC display terminals so you could see your output/results. I also remember how excited I and everyone associated with computers were when the Apple computers showed up. In the late 1970s, Steve Jobs, Steve Wozniak, Mike Markkula and others, designed, developed, and marketed the Apple II which was one of the first commercially successful lines of personal computers. In the early 1980s, Jobs was among the first to see the commercial potential of the mouse-driven graphical user interface which led to the creation of the Macintosh. Jobs is an inventor and visionary and was one of the most influential individuals in the development of the Personal Computer as we know it today. He is the idea man behind Apple.

It's ok to not like his business methods. However it is his company...his ideas...his methods...warts and all. But to not appreciate what he has done for the personal computing/electronics industry is beyond my comprehension.

To actually wish him harm, pain and suffering...like I said...that is a pathetic sentiment.

I admire Steve Jobs for what he has created. I wish him well and wish him recovery from his cancer. I hope he is able to live to develop more ideas and create more great products. Good luck Steve.

So add the cost of a pentalobe screwdriver and replacement screws to the purchase price. $10 ain't much compared to iPhone's ownership cost.

+1 with Shack. I own Iphone 4, Ipods, Ipad. Not a fanboy at all, but they have forced others to step the game up and be competitive. Look at how far Android has come since the Iphone and now the tablet market since the Ipad release.
