dcoil, I completely agree with you. However we're small potatoes in comparison to what Apple is looking at. They're probably more then happy to let a whole host of after market programmers handle the small market looking for perfection...just look at how many 'audiophile' digital players exist...Amarra (several versions), Pure Music Channel D, J Rivers Media, Foobar, AudioNirvana, AyreWave...etc etc. In the next month I hope to compare a Mac Book Pro with my DAC using Pure Music directly to a Mark Levinson no.512 CD player in a ML/Revel system. I have already compared the DAC to the Levinson and they were close (more or a flavor thing) so it should allow me to concentrate on the transport side of things. I tried today on the same system using the above but only with a DacMagic, the Levinson beat it...the most obvious was the weight and effortlessness of the music.

I've read that Steve Jobs is an audiophile himself...the irony.

You say you compared your DAC w/ PM to a ML 512 and the DAC was close. What DAC were you using? And by the way, ML/Revel sounds like a really nice setup

I haven't had a chance to compare my DAC and PureMusic via Macbook to the Levinson but several months ago I compared my DAC to the Levinson usings the Levinson digital coaxial inputs and then just the transport. Overall I preferred the Levinson but it was close, somethings my DAC did better (Bass output and size of sound-stage) but I thought the Levinson did a better job on overall weight and tonal balance. My friend preferred my Dac initially however I think once he listened more he'd agree the Levinson was more refined. I had the luxury of not only knowing my DAC's strenghts but also it's weaknesses. Needless to say I'm curious if my DAC and Macbook could come close or perhaps beat the no. 512.

I use an older modded dac from a company called Museatex. The founder later went on to create EMM Labs and along with Sony created DSD technology AKA SACD. For more information on the Museatex Bitstream or Bidat you can look online at such places as Audiogon.
