Hi Polk gang.
Not sure if I should post this on basic setup/wiring questions or here.
I need your help on something that has been baffling me. First off, I must say that I am still a newbie, so I must apologize for the noob questions.
Here's my setup.
AVR: HK 354
Fronts: 2x Monitor 60 series II
Center: CS10
Blue Ray Player is connected to the AVR via HDMI
Cable box is connect to AVR via HDMI
AVR output connected to TV via HDMI
TV is Panasonic Plasma TCP50 G20
My problem I am having is when I switch from watching a DVD to Cable.
My Tv screen is blank, I can sometimes hear the audio of the TV programme on at the time but a lot of the time I get neither Audio or Picture. The only thing I found that worked to get my programming back was to disconnect my HDMI cable from the TV and plug it back in again.
I've tried other methods like switching off everything and turning it back on again. But that did not work. I've played around with the AVR settings, looked at the troubleshooting guide but no help.
Could it be my HDMI cable is faulty or not up to scratch? I'm using "cheap" AmazonBasics High-Speed HDMI Cable (6.5 Feet/2.0 Meters)[Supports 3D + Audio Return Channel] cables.

HDMI has sync issues. Especially, earlier implementations. For example, I have my BR attached to HDMI1 and my X-Box attached to HDMI2. When I switch between 1 and 2 sometimes I lose audio on 2. Then it becomes a switch back-and-forth until audio starts, or power cycle the AVR.Lumin X1 file player, Westminster Labs interconnect cable

Thanks Blue. So what you are saying is that this is not uncommon and that I have to live with this issue? Or is there a permanent fix out there somewhere? Wifey won't be too happy that I spent $$$ on an upgrade only to have no picture! Telling her to power cycle everytime it happens is not going to cut it with the wife.

The issue is with your receiver.
There's 100+ pages of posts on the AVR254 and AVR354 on avsforums. The HDMI handshake when switching sources is spotty at best. I have the AVR254 and this happened a lot when I switched sources. Sometimes I'd have to power down the tv, all components, and the receiver, and unplug them for it to handshake correctly. It's a pain in the butt really, but eventually it'd work.Main Surround -

Would a HDMI switch between the sources and AVR help in this case ?Speakers: SDA-1C (most all the goodies)

Darn. I think that's gonna drive me and my wife crazy if this happens too often. It's already happened to me 2 times on 1st day of use. -
Just run the hdmi directly to the tv from the cable box. Then run an optical cable from the cable box to the receiver. You may have to change inputs on the tv's remote to watch blu ray but it beats getting aggravated haveing audio and visual go out all the time.HT SYSTEM-

Lot's of things to try out tonight...
After doing more read up, I'm going to play around with power on sequence between all my devices.
If I don't find a solid solution there, then I will try out Tony's idea and buy an optical cable and change my setup a little to bypass the handshake problem.
I can't image doing a power cycle everytime I hit a problem. It would drive me/family crazy.
