First amp question

I have a question concerning my new addition. When I shut down everything and the amps power switch is still on after 30 seconds of everything being shut off except the amp. I get a hum threw my speakers. Is this something I can fix? It is already being ran threw the power conditioner. Also do I need special rca cables between my amp and receiver?

Not sure if this matters, but I was told turn the system on in this order: Source/Preamp/Amp, and turn it off in the opposite - Turn volume down on preamp then off: Amp/Preamp/Source. I did find - especially with my tube amp, that when off, the tubes would still send some power, and if I switched off the preamp too soon, there would be a pop in the speakers.

Regarding your issue, you may want to switch off in that order and that may help. As to why it's happening, I'm an idiot - what do I know?

I am trying to avoid having to go turn off the amp or is that something I have to do? The light stays on because the switch is still on. The noise is there only when the rest of the stuff is off. Amp and everything I am running is in my signature.

You do know what a capacitor in an amplifier does right? What's it matter if your amp is on or not? Oh wait, you probably read that thread about keeping it on until 2012.

Hit mute, or volume down and turn the components off in the opposite order....much like Pycroft stated.

If you want to keep your amp on, hit mute, volume down and skip the amp. You'll most likely get a pop, not abnormal.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I have a faint hum in mine when everything is off except the amp, M1.5t. I just turn it off when not in use. You don't need and special cables like ground loop isolating. I don't think its anything that can be fixed because nothing is broken.

Just turn it off, unless you can hook up a control cable to the avr to turn it on or off at the same time as the avr.

Does your amp have auto sense or something like that? Both my amps stay on 24/7 with no problems. The amps should soft power down once your pre goes off I would think. Maybe I'm missing something.

Some amps require a 12v trigger to turn on and off , check and see if your amp has a 12v trigger in.

You shouldn't need any speical type of RCA connector, unless it has something special.

Cables are things that over time you will want to upgrade, play with, and have fun, but if just starting out you should be good to go with a pair of signal cables or the like. Sidewinders by Audioquest are normally pretty good. Entry level MIT's such as the AVT or EXP line are decent and so are the Kimber Kables as well.

As funds permit you can upgrade, but there are other areas I would say to hit on your system first before looking at more expensive cables.

What about grounding a wire from the amp ground screw to my receiver ground screw?

Some power conditioners can also be culprits. Did you try just plugging directly into a free wall socket?

As for popping when turning off an amp..that's fairly common--especially if you have Big Caps in there because it takes a while for them to 'discharge'. My amp has 60,000 microfarads in caps and takes about 30 seconds to actually power down.

If you hear a hum when everything is powered up and no music, you may have a ground loopy. :frown:

If you read it is only when it is when everything but the amp is off.

Then Its a non issue. The noise is occuring because the source impedance seen by the amplifiers input changes when the preamp (or preout of AVR)is turned off.
