I would not choose to use an iron core inductor unless I had no other choice. Air core are obviously a great choice, but I have also used toroidal inductors in my woofer circuits with great success.

These inductors utilize a toroidal iron core design providing extremely low resistance, low wire length, and high power handling. The core is epoxy coated to secure against short circuit even at very high load. Power handling is massive at 700 watts RMS, making them perfect for high power passive crossovers.

I've used those too and do agree that they work well, especially if you need a low DCR.

These are good for budget builds requiring larger values and low DCR.

So, has anyone actually modded the crossovers to the Mythos ST speakers? I would be eager to try the mod, but have no knowledge or experience to try it out on my own.

    Great thread.
Ive been planning out my 2B xovers when the new boards become available and have decided on the following.
Neotech 16ga solid copper teflon wire
    sonicaps 12uf for highs
    sonicaps 20uf for mids
    Claritycap SA 39uf for lows
    Mundorf 2.7ohm resistors bypassed with 5.8 sonicaps.(TLmod)
I wish claritycap had a 20uf ESA as I would sure like use those instead of the sonicaps.(Mike mentioned the ESAs are a little warmer than the sonicaps and I like my mids a little laid back.)
And madisound sells gold plated disconnects by the piece,so I wont have to buy a hundred of them. Now all I need is to find out what inductors can be replaced for improvement if any.

Curious if you know another source for this wire other than Sonic Craft?

About 18 months ago I modded the crossovers in these which I bought new in 2002. I had never done anything like that so it was a challenge!

I liked the speakers in the showroom, which were powered by a Krell amp - don't remember which one. They sounded so clean with a soundstage that sounded like a live performance rather than having pinpoint imaging.

But when I got them home I found that with my equipment they just didn't sound as good as I thought they should. I was using plenty of power, biamping them with a Carver TFM-42 for the lows, and a TFM 25 for the highs. So the tweaking began.

I worked with Danny Ritchie at GR Research who was a great help. I used all sonicaps, copper ribbon Alpha Core air core inductors and mills resistors. I also used 16awg ofc solid core copper wire with polyethylene insulation for the crossovers and to rewire the speakers with. I direct soldered the internal wiring to the speakers, and built a wooden box for each xover to move it outside of the speaker.

It took a while for the new crossovers to burn in, but once they did there was a huge improvement. I spent around $400, and it was worth it. I finally found their untapped potential!
