Modding crossovers is addicting...

Up on the block here shortly will be the Def Tech BP20 for Ernie Jade and the CLR1000 for my buddy.

What amazes me is the quality of parts Def Tech used when they first came out compared to their current offering. The old Def Tech speakers had FAR superior parts in their crossovers than their current offerings...

Absolutely crazy -- still not as good as what I am putting in it! HAHAHAH!!!!!

Annnyways....

Everyone should mod their crossovers because it is FUN!

Have you ever modded the Mythos ST crossover and if so was it a big difference in SQ?

What I would tell ya - I have seen pics of the BP7000sc crossover (4K a pop) --

The parts they use are ****. Period.

You modify your crossovers I guarantee you will be smiling. All DT crossovers are **** out of the box. 5 cent parts across the board.

Yeah, thought about it after seeing how happy your were with your Def Techs but it'll void the warranty unless I can buy spare crossovers from Bajawaverunner.

    Yeah --

Who needs a warranty - do it man...

My SM450 were horrid out of the box. Was like someone was pissing in my ear...

After the modifications with the Auricap - A+ for a lil 350 pair of monitors (used) - I liked em better than the LSi stuff I have heard. Just me though..

I have almost modded every Polk speaker I owned and my Carver AL III plus. Ever since Def tech got bought out by DEI it seems they went down hill and they also own Polk, the new Polk line looks similar to the Mythos to me anyway. I wonder what the cost difference for a company such as Def Tech or Polk would be to put better caps in them to begin with?

I would guess you are looking at 45 dollars a speaker to put good parts in it...

Say they produce 1,000,000 units a year... 45,000,000 a year?

How much did your monitors cost to mod? Out the box I like the Mythos better than the Lsi's.

Eh - DT has never really used good crossover parts. Even the old 2000 series (10 years old) is **** as far as crossover parts...

Now I will say this - I have two pairs of SM450 - one set is newer than the other....

The 1" medite they use to use is GONE - now it is .5" MDF stacked - not near as nicely built or finished

My monitors - I probably spent about 50-60 bucks a monitor, including a half sheet of No-Rez to throw in the enclosure.. well worth it

CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

lol - You think modding DT speakers is a waste of money?

I could see how you would say that. Out of all the audio companies out there - DT does almost no in-house research. They out-source it to another company. Their tweeter is cheap - clocking in at a nice $30.00 - their woofers are equally as inexpensive at a nice 40-70 dollars. Yet you are paying premium prices.

I have a soft spot for them for some reason. On the other hand, I want to like Polks new offerings - I try to everytime I hear them, but ever since I owned those RTi70 speakers - I just can't shake that. I lost so much money on those speakers and they sounded so poor - I don't know. Hard to forget.

The LSi line up is nice - I would like to hear it again now that they are finished, at PF they definitely needed some more tweaking...

Read closer young man. Every time I want to think you've grown in audio, you just jump into a pool of dumb. Cmon Trey....you know better and have heard more than half the folks on this forum. Don't blame the speaker for your poor foray, purchase and execution of it overall. It's all still here for you reading pleasure you know.

Looks like they are using a mylar cap in the tweet network - what is the value on the little black cap infront of it (the yellow one without a metal top)

Looks like those two are part of the tweeter network -- just a guess based on the other ones I have seen

That big **** yellow cap has gotta be a huge value to be that large. 100-250uf?

    That would be pricey...

I'm currently finishing off my last pair of speakers; powered Swan M200 monitors. I did the resistors last year, but never got around to the caps, which should be done soon. The best part of modding is trying new parts and challenging yourself with ever more complicated circuits.

I wish manufactures would at least spend the money on some Bennic caps instead of electrolytics. Small value air core inductors are not that expensive either.

Definitive uses Iron Core on their woofers - all of them. No exceptions. I am told this is generally ok. Polk even does it on some of their stuff.

But I agree with you man - Definitive is the worst I have seen dollar for dollar for the crossover parts they use.

Anytime I have confronted them about it - all I get in response is "Yeah, I have had customers ask about this in the past, I will pass on your findings! Thanks for sharing!"

What many people don't understand is that what we pay for components is no where near the discount big manufactures would pay. It would not hinder the price of the speakers and would sound that much better to increase their sales. The problem is corperate types want to get every penny out of each piece they can. I really hope Polk does the new XO's right in the LSI's. They certainly have spent a lot in R&D on them. It would be a shjame to see them not spend an extra $20-30 more on the XO's

There older lsi's crossover didn't look anything special. The funny thing is these $4000 definitives sound great with these crossovers. Can't wait to see what something better will sound like.

They care about the sound though:wink:
If the tweeter circuit was cleaned up a bit it would make the speaker sound so much better. I do realize that most consumers uise crap cables, sources, and power. Still it is the demo and the reviews that sell the gear for the most part.

They were actually pretty decent minus the cheap board construction. At least they used film caps on the highs. The tweeter resistor should have been stronger than 5w. For not too much money they can really shine with some good gear when modding the caps and resistors.

The issue I have with definitives out of the boxes is incoherent, smeared highs.

They literally sound like a blob of highs. Throwing a nice set of caps and some good resistors in there REALLY cleans those tweeters up.

Iron core is ok on the woofer of a 3 way, I wouldn't use one anywhere else though.
