Wheeeeeeeee!!!!!!

It was a weenie snow fall today and it's honestly still falling but I took the opportunity to pull the tractor and 42" (42" wide, 26" tall) snow thrower out of the shed and see how it did. Glad I got the snow chains on it, it would have gone no where quickly without them. Made short work of the driveway, sidewalk and...well...everyone else's driveway and sidewalk as well.

I have 3 elderly house holds on my block and one lady who has 2 children with Down's syndrome. her husband passed away a couple years ago too. So at the very least I trucked on down to their houses and cleared their driveways and sidewalks while my neighbor cleared walks to the doors with a shovel. 8 houses and probably a 1/4 mile of sidewalks in an hour and a half.

Honestly, it's way overkill. But living on a cul de sac, the plows make one pass up, one pass down the street. A 6" snow fall leaves us with 2 feet of snow boulders in front of driveways. The whole reason I got the snow thrower was for those days with the snow boulders. The plows haven't even hit our street yet and honestly, I'm more inclined to block the end of the street and clear it with the snow thrower instead.

I'm almost sad because all the work is done. No more snow to throw.

My neighbor was out on his new 4-wheeler that has a plow attachment. I think he was having a bit more fun than me with my shovel.

Ok, we only had an inch, but I bet he was dying for an excuse to get that thing out! My guess is that when we get some decent accumulation, it won't be as effective.

Actually, the only reason I have it is because I saw no sense in getting a snow thrower with another costly engine and more equipment to maintain when I had a tractor with a power takeoff system. So the snow thrower assembly just needs to be cleaned and greased before it's put away for the season. It sits in the corner of the shed. Spiders can build webs all over it and I just have to clean and touch up whatever paint has chipped. Much lower cost of ownership and I only need one gas engine to maintain. I have two small engines, one for a leaf blower, the other for the trimmer. It's better this way and cheaper initial cost (45% discount on the thrower assembly and $700 for a used tractor, total cost $1600). If I had paid retail, this is easily $4K worth of equipment.

Normally, at 2pm, I'd still have 2 more hours of shoveling after starting around 11 am. I started at 11:30 and by 1:30, I was all cleaned up, having a beer and chatting with the neighbor. I have the entire Saturday free again and my neighbors aren't killing themselves either. That right there is worth every penny.

Besides, if my parents, who live up the street, need a hand, this pig will truck right on up the street and make short work of their driveway as well.

Get out of my thread. I don't need your condescension and belittling of my efforts to be a good neighbor destroying my thread. You're nothing but a troll and you obviously have it in for me. The fact that you follow me around and cause problems in every single thread I post in is a violation of the forum rules. I don't bother you, I wonder why it is so far beyond you that you can't do the same? Put me on your ignore list and forget I exist. I've already done the same for you.

We got about 6 inches of snow last night, my neighbor had been bragging about his new snowblower for 2 weeks. When I went out to do my walks I noticed he did his and the neighbor on the other side but stopped exactly on my property line, nice when I give his kid a ride to work at least once a week! So I asked if I could borrow his machine and would fill it with gas he said he would send his son out to do my walks "later" , still waiting, guess his kid will have a nice walk to work next time! Normally we get along, not sure what the problem is. If I had a machine I would do his walks, I have even done them with a shovel before.

Man this sucks big time! YOU guys are getting snow and we're getting squat! Oh sure, winter may have started fine in December but we were hit with mild temperatures and lots of rain around New Years and that wiped out ALL the snowmobile trails in practically all of Quebec! We've only had a dusting of snow since then.

So....between the trail pass, license, and upgrades to my snowmobile, I've sunk in 1K and haven't yet used the damn thing. It looks like January is down the drain and I pray for some snow real soon.

It looks like we're gonna be in the white stuff for a couple of weeks. No break in the cold weather, more snow on Tuesday, more on Wednesday and now a possibility next weekend again as well. You should bring your snowmobile down here!

It's a tough thing if you hvea a plow or snowblower; on the one hand you want to be nice and helpful to your neighbors, but on the other you have to draw the line somewhere or you're just doing everyone's driveways for hours at a time.

I'm sure it's nothing personal against you.

Well this morning I used my new snowblower for the third time since buying it! It was only to remove the 5" of snow bank the plows left. So I too did the next door drive way. I want some snow so I can use this baby for real. It is self propelled which is nice and easy on my back. But I feel like a goof using it on so little snow when the old man across is using a shovel!

Yeah, sucks that you've only used it a few times since getting it but trust me, the moment you get rid of it is the day you will have 10 feet of snow fall!

My dad had one for years. Needed a new carb. $400 worth of parts and work to fix it. It was a massive Techumseh unit. He let it go and ultimately sold it to someone else. The next year? "Blizzard of '96". I cursed him with every shovel full.

I moved out, what did he do? Bought a snow blower. Then when he found out I got this pig told me I didn't need it and it was a waste of money. Right now, not worth it. But the day we get hit hard again and I'll come cruising up the hill with the snow thrower is the day he'll think it wasn't such a waste after all.

Being in the "Mid-Atlantic" states we don't get snow fall like the more northerly places and places like Canadia. But we also don't get the months on end of single digit temps turning all that snow to powder. When we do get snow, it's wet, it's heavy and usually covered in ice. It's difficult to shovel and honestly life threatening for elderly. Snow throwers are a godsend! when it is cold enough and it is nothing but powder, I break out the leaf blower and a broom!

Hey, I'm all for the snow on it's way. Here in Charlotte folks are already bracing for the worst.....not so much for snow but from the wintry mix and freezing rain combined with temperatures that will remain below freezing. Snow is fun because down here the entire town shuts down for 2 inches. Stupid really, but that's there choice.

Rain and freezing temperatures are not. The last ice storm we had here in the Carolinas, I lost power for two weeks. Now, that's not a long time in the big scheme of things but think about it. No showers, 44 degree living rooms and bedrooms, no hot food (electric stove), no entertainment and no lights beyond candles. Those were the longest two weeks of my life.

3 days before we got our electricity back, I had to drive an hour and a half away to pick up a kerosene heater at a Wal-Mart. We had called beforehand [along with hundreds of other people] and were waiting there at the truck [that was completely filled with nothing but kerosene heaters] as they were unloading them from the truck. The truck was sold out in less than 30 minutes.

Snow is fun. Ice is not.

Either is fun unless you're not prepared. I would say that before one spends hundreds, thousands, hundreds of thousands of dollars on audio they better make sure they have their priorities straight. How are you suppose to listen to audio if you lose electricity? Easy, you have to pay to play. Better to have it and not need it than to need it and not have it. Nothing like being 100% comfortable in your home knowing no matter what happens outside that inside you are fine. Electricity, food, utilities, and of course audio are all things that should be taken care of. My emergency plan starts with making sure I have the right cds out. The rest is taken care of.

I'll never go through that again. I have a generator, kerosene heater, gas fireplace and an outdoor grill that has been stockpiled on charcoal. The only thing that is the same is the electric stove. I wanted the gas stove, but that part of the house had already built built when I bought it. We'll be comfortable this go 'round.
