I have to agree with the above. If honestly there are no jobs by you, and housing is to expensive then you may have to move to an area where you can get house and a job easier.

It will throw you out of your comfort zone, but if you do have children with needs with schools, often many schools will understand the situation. Also depending on what you do/company apply for some will offer relocation assistance so that the move won't be as bad or tough.

I know one place that is looking for people right now and that would be the railroad. As a conductor you would be gone a lot, and not always the best for a family but CN I know is doing a big push for getting people seeing a lot of their workforce will be gone soon (baby boomers). The pay is good even just starting out, however you have to know that you will be gone a lot.

Other areas are like the tech people, etc so there are things out there, but once again it just may require moving.

Have you cut out all of your unnecessary expenses, such as cell phone (get a throw away if you need one), cable and internet? Many of these monthly expenses add up to a sizable amount of money that you could use immediately to help put a roof over your heads and are more creature comforts rather than necessities. If you have a library in your city, you can almost assuredly get on the web that way if you need access to e-mail or job leads.

Maybe I'm overreacting to the desperation of your situation, but the tent reference leads us to believe you're basically on the streets ( ).

I'm sorry to hear about your situation, and I hope that something comes to you soon. I agree with others who are urging you to think about bailing your area (state, really) for places with more jobs. Texas seems to be good. Even out west in Montana and Wyoming (which is mostly rural) is booming with the mining industry.

How do you move to another state with a wife, 4 kids, and only $400?

And then when he moves, I doubt he could get a house for $575 a month. The Saginaw area is cheap, because no one wants to live there. I know here in northern Michigan, a three bedroom would be at least $1000+ utilities, and that's for a not so nice house.

Good point. I know at least in Massachusetts they're legally not allowed to put a family with kids on the street without a LOT of extra time and effort. Landlords rely on people's ignorance of these laws to kick them out anyway, but you may be able to stick it out for longer than you think.

Dude, I thought you said you had a deposit and a couple months rent in the bank ? Then you tell us you only have 400. I'm confused, because everywhere I see in that area wants at least one month security deposit and first months rent upfront. Your nowhere near those requirements. How much can you afford a month for rent ? No B.S. now, because between us all,we may be able to help get you in the door somewhere, and I mean this with the highest respect for you and your family.

If it's such a tough time, don't think about how big a place should be for you to be able to stay in. Just downgrade, go rent a 2-bedroom, or even a 1-bedroom to save money for later. Hell, a 1-bedroom in the States is even bigger than the whole house in other countries. You're lucky you can still enjoy a steady pay check. Adapt to the situation.

Tell your local TV news and or papers about your dillema both to get money and to put pressure on your landlord, odds are someone will offer you a rental also before its all said and done.

Ok, hubby's probably gonna kick my butt for stopping by under his screen name but I had to after seeing all your posts and since he's at work.........this is Dude's Wife for this reply!

First of all, I have to say all you guys here have been so wonderful over the years and have made Dude one really happy camper and I can't thank you all enough. (I've been wanting to tell you all that for a long time now.)

Here in MI there is nothing that protects a family. Heck, they can shut off your utilities in the middle of winter if you can't get help through one of the state agencies. We'll get a 24 hour notice any day now. Thankfully, we got a lead on a place today that he's going to look at after work tomorrow and is within our price range and the size is doable for the short term. We have looked (more so he than I) outside our normal "comfort zones" for work and run into many obstacles. The other part of the dilemma is the boys - one of us needs to be available at a moment's notice should a problem arise and are fortunate to have teachers that are fairly willing to work with us and the boys which is actually harder to find than one might think. We have had an offer, if we can't figure something out, to move to TX and there MIGHT be a job available and we would have a few people we know there but no guarantees and in this economy, we're kind of forced to stay in the area because one of us is actually working. I have started the application process to get SSI for the boys but of course there is no guarantee and it could take years.

We are in one of the lowest income areas in the state and housing is "more affordable" here than anywhere else. It's not like we're trying to stay in an area that's way over our heads - everyone around here is in the same boat for the most part and the landlords don't get it and on top of that we are in one of the few counties in the state without Rental Codes because the people who are on the committee that would set them up are all landlords so of course they don't want those. Then there is the judge who handles L/T cases who is friends with most of the landlords and will argue that it's a small town and everyone just knows everyone if you ask him to recuse himself. It's a losing situation for most in the area. I know, then get out. Then the job situation comes up again! lol

Not sure why he said we have a few months rent - perhaps he meant that we can cover the next few month's rent with no problem because we have a reliable income now. He can answer that later. I have the Red Cross ready to help us get in and should be able to get other help if we need it, all we have to do is come to an agreement with the landlord. We have tried for some 2 bedroom places but with 4 kids, people don't want to rent to us and the government subsidized places will only rent us a 3 bedroom. We understand that we're not the only ones on hard times - he just gets frustrated at our lack of luck in various aspects of life but I am trying to get things turned around and to find a way to get him back to school for whatever he wants to go for, it's just going to take time. If we stay in the area, we can afford $500/month max being realistic with other utilities that will need to be paid. The last time we ran into hard times, we camped all summer with a 2 month old, 3 and 4.5 year old (Dudeinatent) so we know we can get through this one. As we like to say, I'm optimistically pessimistic and he is pessimistically optimistic. Food is not an issue, we've always got that covered and usually have the housing thing covered - no cable, government discount cell program to get us the bare minimum for what we need for a phone and internet is through a prepaid cell which only costs a few bucks a month. We trimmed the "fat" a long time ago when we saw things getting tight and always look to do things cheaper or for free. Turning things around is just taking longer than he'd like but at least I know he has you all to come and get ideas from!

You all are an amazing group of people and wish everyone could be this kind to each other in times of need! (And yes, I get some hearty laughs at some of the bantering that goes on while reading over his shoulder!) And no, we will not sell the SDAs, I'll sell myself on a street corner before they go! ;)

I'm not asking anyone here for any help, even though I do appreciate it. The biggest issue I have is shelter for my family. Between the Red Cross, DHS, and personal funds, I have enough to cover a deposit and a few months of rent, with steady money coming in every two weeks.

Guess I should have clarified it a little more. I can get help from the Red Cross to cover either first months rent or the security deposit, and DHS to cover the other. First month and in the door is covered. With steady income I will have the next month covered as I will have at least another pay check by the time rent is due. I should be able to keep a float until I can find something better.

I have talked with my wife a couple of times about moving out of state, but with her grandmother not in the best of health does not want to move to far away yet. I might be able to do northern Indiana or norther Ohio (God I hated those O-HI-O commercials).

Man that would be cool, might get bored though.

I must thank some of you for the slap in the face. My wife is right, we do need me to get some schoolin'. I know what I want to do. I would have to go for a dual masters. One in Electronic Engineering and another in Audio Engineering and a minor in acoustics/physics. (I want to record the music, amplify the music, then reproduce the music.) Seriously though, I would not mind getting a degree in Electronics, I think that would be my best fit. Be it in Electrical Engineering or in Electronics Engineering Technology.

I do appreciate the help that you are all offering, but it is not what I was looking for. I truly was looking for Ways to make a page that would generate enough traffic to pull something like this off. I know it would take months, but so would they type of loan I was looking for. I figured if a guy could do it for a car why couldn't I do it for a house.

Well it looks like you may be ok if you can find a house to rent, certainly going back to school is a great idea not sure it is realistic though, how are you going to keep the wife and kids housed fed clothed on a school loan? unless you work full time. It looks like that moving closer to family that may able to help with babysitting and or housing while you both work may be your best bet to gain a little nest egg.

Getting a double masters while working full time would be almost impossible, there simply isnt enough hours in the day, Do you have an associates or bachelors yet?

I wish you and yours the best of luck Ted but to be honest no one owes you a house and begging for one on the internet isnt something I could do, of course I dont have 4 kids to take care of either.

I don't know what your tax situation is but there are fairly generous child tax credits and earned income credits which you may qualify for. There are also additional exemptions for the disabled in the household. Look into that pronto.

Found a place to rent last night. Went and met with the owner, sounds like we can move in next week. Got home and then got a call from a lady who got my number from a real estate broker, and she has a place she would be willing to do a land contract on, for the same as rent at the other place, plus it is bigger and has another bedroom. It is also in the same area as the rental place (which may also do a land contract). I had a kid eruption while I was on the phone with the lady who owns the four bedroom place, so I am going to contact her tomorrow and arrange a viewing. Outright she wants 27,000 for it. So we will see, she did say it did need some work though, but is livable, so we shall see.

I'm coming to this discussion a little late, but are you really sure you want to buy a house in an area with no jobs? I understand that 27K is cheap, but that's like stepping into concrete in my opinion. Wouldn't it be better to save up for a more permanent fix, such as a move to an area with an active jobs market? How about a moderate climate where you're not spending so much on utilities? Cheap housing is available in many areas of the country now.
