What deal is "The one that got away" for you?

Mine was a local Craigslist add that said:

Old Marantz mono tube amps (two), includes a preamp if you can get it out of the cabinet, all for $300 or offer.

I could tell from the picture that it was rare Marantz Model 9 tube amps and a Model #7 tube preamp.

Probably the kid's Dad's or Granfather's cherished stereo system.

At the time, a set like this (restored) sold in the mid $20K in the US and another set for more in Japan.

Someone else got there first and probably got everything for $200 since they were "old".

S&W Model 27, highway patrolman, should have never sold that one. Stupid, stupid, stupid. It'd be worth triple what a paid for it in the 80's; not to mention it was one fine piece of iron.

1954 Chevrolet for 250 bucks in 1983. Went to see the car on my way home from school and told the owner I would come get it after work that night. Got there after work and she(the car) was gone. It would have been my first car.

I thought of another (non-audio) one:

About 1978 or 1979, driving (styling) in my Pinto 2-door in the Detroit suburbs, see a 1968 Dodge Coronet parked with "for sale" sign in the window, nice shape with blackwall tires, poverty dog-dish hubcaps, black bench seat and auto. trans with shifter on the column. Thinking it's probably a 318 or even only a 225. Pop the hood, see a 426 Hemi (untimate sleeper car), remember thinking "boy I bet this thing gets **** mileage, and I don't have anywhere near the $1800 asking price".....closed the hood and drove away in my Pinto.

KICK ME IN THE **** the next time you see me.

Just missed a Nitty Gritty RCM for $30.00 in CL a week ago. Nice seller, but one person in front of me. :frown:

Someone had "Old Tuner" listed for $20 about 6 months ago--It was a Sansui TU-X1. That person never responded to my email.

A pair of Carver Platinums that were on CL for $200. They were listed as a pair of larger speakers that "may not have the original woofers"; which they did from the pictures. Called the guys phone number, but never got a hold of him...

It was a waterfront house, a restored 3k sq ft victorian with 160' of saltwaterfront across Puget Sound from Seattle (Port Orchard). We were in the market for a bigger house, and wife would not even look at it. We ended up spending 20K more for a tract house in a new development.

I would've made well over 500K on that one when we moved to Tucson.
My equipment sig felt inadequate and deleted itself.

You guys have some good ones. Mine is more of a missed opportunity.
I used to be friends with a guy who handled Indian affairs for the government from the east coast to Illinois. He needed someone to open a snack shop in the bingo hall on one of the reservations, either in Wisconsin,or Seminole Florida. Now, anyone who has ever stepped foot in one, knows these are money makers. 3 seatings a night for bingo, no other food can be brought in, and all the stuff you sell is the high profit garbage, pop, nachos, hot dogs, and such. Bottomline, this dude would give me a lease, in exchange for favors, sexual favors. After wineing and dineing this cat, that's what it came down to. Obviously I ran like the wind. My brother keeps telling me I should have taken one up the.... for the team. We still laugh about it, wasn't funny then but now, frickin' hilarious.

Not to add insult to injury Tony, but if you had proof to back you up, the lawsuit against the government you could have won would have brough home a lot more than the consessions deal would have.

I was watching MuscleCar the other night and it started off ... "Ford put about 1000 of these 428 big blocks in the Mustang, about 6000 had a 4-speed transmission, of those 154 were painted Winter Blue, and only 36 had a white interior". They described my first car!!! Don't even want to know what that is worth today.

I know, I know - pics or it didn't happen. :frown:

Also even more recent I just remembered, A beautiful Pioneer 6.1 receiver for 30.00. It didn't have Hdmi he said, that's the reason for the price. It was huge!! I was second in line there to.:frown:

But just to balance I must say I did buy a Star trek Bronze Enterprise 1701 statue for 150.00 6 months ago. It sold for 1500.00 when new. That will be with me when I die..

Not even sure if this qualifies as a lost "deal", but here goes:

We did a whole-house cleaning a few years ago for a real estate agent. The house was already vacant, prob. a foreclosure. Well, almost vacant...
they had a finished area in the basement that was pretty much dedicated to baseball memorabilia, Yankee stuff to be exact.

The agent had told me to take whatever wasn't nailed down (guess she never saw what was down there?), but being a die-hard Mets fan, I only grabbed a couple of items for a friend who was a Yankee fan. I try to forget that day, but I am sure, judging by my friends reaction, that a lot of the stuff I left behind was worth some coin... but I'll never know, as the house was occupied the next week. Oh well.
So, are you willing to put forth a little effort or are you happy sitting in your skeptical poo pile?

If we are talking about cars... in the early 90s I had an opportunity to buy a fairly low mileage (50K), all original 1969 Boss 302 Mustang for $22K. It would have been tough...but I could have swung it. Two young kids and not making that much at the time helped make my decision to pass. Today in that condition, unrestored...it might be worth $75-100K. I always wanted one...and now they are probably priced beyond what I am willing to pay. Oh well...comme ci, comme ca...
