Blatant Sexism in Audio Reviews

Would it be sexist of me to inquire if the volume knob on my preamp could be retrofitted in the shape of a woman's hooter?

I can't even get my wife to admit a HD video signal is superior to a SD signal...but, my 8 year old son yesterday was flipping between the SD and HD channels of iCarly and exclaimed, "Dad, your right!!! High Definition is much better!" I couldn't be prouder as a father.
What was this thread about?
Exactly! My stepdaughters will watch a movie on an SD station - complete with commercials - with the HT speakers off, and we OWN a copy of the same movie on Blu-ray. Completely unexplainable to me.
So, if they were to actually notice or comment on any aspect of audio or video, yeah, I would find that noteworthy. -

Yes. I wish I could have seen more from these hurtful boors BEFORE I had my operation. -

I'd be interested only if it was soft, told me I was huge and giggled when I adjusted it.

Because to some people, watching a movie is a social experience...and they're simply interested in the story line of the movie.
Commercials give them a chance to stop and talk during the movie, for one thing.
Plus, some people simply don't care about video quality. I think a lot of people anymore have forgotten how to watch a movie for the sake of taking in the story. Anymore, people are so caught up with the video quality and audio quality...that they forget that they're watching a movie...and not just a series of graphical/audio clips.
They flip through the channels, and find that the movies on...so they watch it. Why would they flip through the channels, find a movie...and then instead of watching the broadcast version that they just turned on...stop and put in the blu-ray? That kind of defeats the purpose of watching broadcast TV the way I see it. Also, by the standards of probably 98% of the population, the resolution and audio quality of the SD broadcast version is spectacular. But, I'm one of the "crazy" ones that doesn't even really think that Blu-ray looks much better than DVD. Is it better? Well...yes...but is it worth me going out and replacing my significantly large collection of DVD's with Blu-rays? Hell no. I haven't even had most of the DVD's in my collection for more than a few years really...I'd feel like an idiot if I were to start replacing them with Blu-rays...because I would be getting absolutely NO extra enjoyment out of them as opposed to my DVD versions.
But, I'm in the "couldn't care less about video quality" camp myself. It really just isn't important to me. I'm still using a 27" Magnavox CRT TV, that is by NO MEANS HD...and I don't even have a Blu-ray player yet. I also have a 42" Sony Plasma TV...but honestly, the 27" CRT gets more use. The 27" is in my listening room and hooked up to my 2 channel rig, where as the 42" plasma is in the living room and hooked up the the HT. Honestly, I don't think the 42" has even been on for a few weeks. Half the time I forget that it's even there. For that matter though, I still regularly watch VHS tapes. They really don't look bad either. There's not been a single time that I've been watching a VHS tape on my 27" CRT and I've thought "wow this is such low quality that I can't even stand to watch it". People worry too much about being able to see the nose hair on the characters. Quit paying so much attention to nose hair and how large the characters pores are...and just watch the freakin movie. You'll take a lot more home with you from a good story line, than you will from being able to see someones pores and nose hair.
Like I said above...it seems to me that many of you have forgotten how to watch a movie for the sake of watching a movie and taking in a story. People are so caught up in special effects and 13987956897816305976965092723p resolution and 92.8 surround sound that they have forgotten that there's even a storyline.
As far as the sexism issue goes in the OP...I don't really see that as being sexist at all. As many others have stated, it has to do more with the fact that someone who isn't familiar with the system noticed an obvious difference. No one says you have to replace your old movies.
I still watch my old DVD's, but when I purchase something new, it's always on Blu. The difference is worth it, especially with larger TV's. Yes, Curt, you're right. We watched a (IMO) highly-forgettable movie last night that some of the girls thought was a great movie - because it had Gerard Bulter in it. They also thought the audio was amazing - because it had a Ke$ha song in it... One of my stepdaughters was excited to watch a movie, even though she'd be leaving in 30 minutes. To me, this makes no sense, but to each their own. I don't mind that they do it this way. It's partly generational and partly age.
Oh, and did I mention that part of their routine for getting settled in to watch a movie includes making sure they have their phone handy for frequent texting? To be fair, this texting thing also afflicts the teenage boys... -

That's kind of like saying people have forgotten what it means to listen to music and take in the experience of what the composer felt when he was writing the song. Instead they concentrate on high end tube amps, subwoofers and the best speakers they can afford. Doesn't make a lot of sense does it?!?

This has to be one of the greatest in all time entertainment threads as well as great comments (Cathy).
To me it's simple really! My wife loves music but could give a rat's **** about the gear aside from its aesthetics and has never been into the hobby like me and doesn't have "the trained ear" as Darqueknight puts it. However, many, many times after an upgrade or tweak she has walked into the 2 ch room and commented on how much better or worse it made the rig sound. That to me is proof positive that the change made a difference because if my wife hears it, it just confirms what it is that I am hearing without inviting half of the Polkies in MD, DE, PA and NJ to hear the improvement or change.
One more thing, when I upgraded/updated my 1.2TL xovers, when I first played music through them she walked into the room and said, "You and Jesse really messed up your speakers!" However after over 350 hours of burnin, she commented how much better they sounded then when in their original state.
Now tell me, am I being sexist or hold true to a stereotype? -

It's not as if I've never seen a Blu-ray on a bigger TV. I have numerous friends with TV's that are anywhere from 50" to 65"...and I've done comparisons between DVD's and Blu-ray several times on their bigger screens. You already have a 42" plasma, how does a sub $100 BDP equate to a thousand $+ to upgrade to Blu-ray?
You're really grasping for straws now."He who fights with monsters should look to it that he himself does not become a monster. And when you gaze long into an abyss the abyss also gazes into you." Friedrich Nietzsche -

You're really grasping for straws now.
My plasma isn't 1080p capable. It was one of the very first Sony plasma TV's on the market. We got it in 2002, when they were still very new. It also doesn't have HDMI...obviously. However, it does have a subwoofer pre-out...oddly enough...lol...Kinda cool though.
And I'm not the kind of person that's going to buy some piece of crap $100 Blu-ray player for the sake of being able to say I have a Blu-ray player. I prefer to buy quality components. Whenever I do make the jump to Blu-ray...it'll probably be in the form of an Oppo BDP-83SE...in reality though, the Blu-ray playback will just be an added bonus, as I'd really be buying it mainly as a 2 channel source upgrade.
So...new TV + at least a few hundred for a Blu-ray player + cost of Blu-ray discs=At least $1500, and more likely around $2000.
So...where are these straws I'm grasping at?The nirvana inducer-

No apologies are necessary Outfitter. By the definition, I suppose it could be considered correct, however, audio gear is generally thought of as mans hobby, and it's because most of you get caught up in the gear rather than the music. (ie, jumping further & further down the EXPENSIVE rabbit hole of gear searching for the never to be found perfect sound.)
Most of my clashes on the forum come about because I have a totally different outlook and approach about this hobby the majority of you do especially when it comes to powering a system. Because I want to get it sounding great the first time around rather than endlessly shuffling through gear.
Which is why I stressed making it truly about the music. The interest in the gear may follow behind it if only to just like me to assemble a terrific system to now sit back and enjoy the music.

I can't imagine there is a single member here for whom it's not "about the music".
You may not strive to improve the way your music is delivered to you, but if you are honest with yourself, I'm sure you will concede there's somewhere in your life where you strive to improve performance.

Ok...whatever. The entire purpose of a movie is to convey a story. That is what they are here for. The picture and audio is simply a side effect of that. Without the story, none of that could exist.
I guess I just have to accept the fact that a huge percentage of our population is intellectually dead now, and incapable of/unwilling to comprehend a storyline. All they can register is an explosion, gunshots and a car chase.
Whatever...I'm done here. Have a nice day.:rolleyes:The nirvana inducer-

Ooooooh. The intellectual superiority card has just been played.
IMO...movies are entertainment...no more...no less."Just because youre offended doesnt mean youre right." - Ricky Gervais

. . . and how one chooses to be entertained is completly a decision they have the complete right to make. -

Also, first you stated "Because I want to get it sounding great the first time around rather than endlessly shuffling through gear" implying you got it right the first time, but now you write "I simply have reached a point where enough is enough" implying you've spent money to upgrade somewhere along the way yourself.
I'm so confused
My upgrades came as additions to my system over a period of years. My original 2 channel system stayed in place for over 12 years from 2/6/1990 -2002 until I decided to put together a HT system.
So I had to get a receiver (which already had preouts), a year later I got the following that is still listed in my signature. Pioneer dvd player, Boston center channel, and Boston Sub. Then in 2004 I joined Club Polk and made further additions over a 3 year period which included a Parasound 1500A amp in 2004, Outlaw monoblock in 2005, FXi3s my current Sunfire amp in 2006 & prepro in 2007. My last major purchase was last year with the DSW400 sub to even out the bass in my bigger livingroom.
To this day, the biggest shock & improvement was the addition of the Parasound amp which sold me on powerful amps. I got the Sunfire amp because I wanted all of my 5 channels amped and it's the only one I could physically manage at that time, and I got the matching prepro because I wanted to get back to having all separates.
The Parasound went to my brother for his LSI 7s & the Outlaw went to Willow & the receiver went to a good friend. Unless something dies, this will hold me for years to come.Marantz AV-7705 PrePro, Classé 5 channel 200wpc Amp, Oppo 103 BluRay, Rotel RCD-1072 CDP, Sony XBR-49X800E TV, Polk S60 Main Speakers, Polk ES30 Center Channel, Polk S15 Surround Speakers SVS SB12-NSD x2 -
Got it.
So when you wrote, "audio gear is generally thought of as mans hobby, and it's because most of you get caught up in the gear rather than the music. (ie, jumping further & further down the EXPENSIVE rabbit hole of gear searching for the never to be found perfect sound.)", you thought you could preach away with a little XY Chromosome bashing that we don't realize it is "about the misic" because you'd already dumped your thousands into upgrades over a previous period of time.
Good job, and not self-righteous, blatant sexism, male bashing or disingenuous at all.VTL ST50 w/mods / RCA6L6GC / TlfnknECC801S
