Ghost-powered PSW150

I have a PSW150 that I believe I purchased back in 2002. I recently moved to a 45 year old home that I had professionally wired, by the same A/V guys that have wired my places in the past 15 years.

About 4 months after moving in, my sub, which always I leave in Auto-Power ON mode, began producing bass noise when no audio component was powered on. It seemed to be slight, random rumblings initially - sounding like someone driving by playing Flo Rida - to now what is so loud it vibrates the floor and can be heard from end to end in my house.

It works perfectly, as it always has, when an a/v component is on, but I now have to turn it completely off when not in use. It is very random in nature.

It has a dedicated electrical outlet with no filter, line conditioner or surge protector. The outlet is 40 year old aluminum wire. The component cable runs about 12 feet under my house to the a/v closet. This is almost the exact same configuration that I had at my last place for the past four years. A dedicated outlet, aluminum wire, etc.

Is it dying? Faulty component cable (remember, it works great when watching movies, listening to music)? Could it be some sort of electrical interference? Ghost of a past Infinity rep? What should I try, that won't break my budget? thanks!

Sounds like it's picking up some interference from somewhere. Is the cable shielded ? The old wire in the wall sure isn't helping. Maybe you need an exorcist instead.

Aside from repeating this over and over:smile:...maybe a good power conditioner would help.

I agree with tonyb that it sounds like you need a new better shielded sub cable. I had this experience when I went from one sub to two. Didn't have a really good second sub cable and used some generic cable til my cables from signal cable came in. That cable had no shielding what so ever and would just drive me crazy. Got my signal cables in, and my subs are quiet as ever until something calls for them to go boom. lol

I'm kinda hoping he goes for option A, exorcism. Be kinda cool the looks he'd get from the neighbors.

Going the exorcism route I bet throwing holy water onto the sub in large amounts would certainly bring some results...

Cable is new and shielded, so I am going to try the Monster Subwoofer PowerCenter to clean up the power source. Thanks for the advice. Now, I have to repaint over the "666" that mysteriously appeared on the side of the cabinet.

I have one of those, too!

I went through the same thing with another sub, it's a ground loop. Try running a ground wire from the plate amp to the grounding post of your receiver.

    ^ +1

I used to have an M&K sub that would pick up CB radio all the damn time. Imagine waking up in the middle of the night thinking Billy Joe Bob is in your house!
