PSW50 Rattle...

Hi everyone, first time poster here.

I have a Polk Audio PSW50 subwoofer that was purchased back in 1997. The other night I noticed that it was starting to rattle (especially on punchier bass). I read online to remove the speaker from the cabinet to free-air test it and I have confirmed that it is most likely a voice coil issue.

Does anyone know of an authorized parts dealer in Canada...around the Toronto/Mississauga/GTA area that would sell a replacement driver for the PSW50 (MW8004)?

Just out of curiosity, what is the going sell price for this replacement driver?

Any suggestions/recommendations would greatly be appreciated.

Cheers!

Your subwoofer failing means it's probably time to throw that thing away and upgrade to a new sub.

I agree. It's not worth the cost of the driver which will probably be in the 40-60 range.
CTC BBQ Amplifier, Sonic Frontiers Line3 Pre-Amplifier and Wadia 581 SACD player. Speakers? Always changing but for now, Mission Argonauts I picked up for $50 bucks, mint.

I have that sub as well - it's actually pretty nice for its size. It puts the PSW10 to shame.

Unfortunately the other two guys are correct, finding a new driver isn't cost effective at all. At best you could find a similar driver to replace it, but an exact match is almost impossible to come by.

Sorry about your driver, Radar, but the advice you've been given so far seems to be pretty good.

If it went out, though, it couldn't have gone out at a better time. This time of year you can find a fair amount of good deals.

Something you might want to look at is the Polk PSW505 sub (12" driver). It's available at Newegg for $199, SHIPPED. Good reviews, good word of mouth on here, too.

A little cheaper is the Polk PSW110 (10" driver).
It's available at Newegg for $149, SHIPPED.
Good reviews, I bought one for Christmas for the hellions around here for their gaming system downstairs. Very satisfied but this sub is mainly used for home theater and gaming; your mileage may vary if your system is mainly used for music.

And even cheaper is the Polk PSW10.
It's available at Newegg for $89, SHIPPED.
Decent reviews, not the be-all, end-all of subwoofers but if you only have $89 in your budge, you only have $89 in your budget. Just another consideration.

I think these prices are only good for a couple of more days (just a heads up).
Don't know what your budget is, but these are a couple of less expensive suggestions.
If you have a larger amount to spend, then you'll need some quality input from the gurus around here with higher tastes.

    Good luck !

BTW: the Polk Audio Ebay store is a very good place to look for subwoofers, too.

Lurk partsexpress.com to see what kind of affordable aftermarket driver they have available (too bad you missed on their holiday sales)
