Ford Expedition, destroyed by dumb workers

Both of those guys should be fired immediately... and cited for wanton destruction of property."People sleep peaceably in their beds at night only because rough men stand ready to do violence on their behalf." George Orwell

It was actually more like 2 feet. So no, I don't think so. At least not without serious meaty tires, which I rarely, if ever see on Expeditions.
You think if that front end loader with ~36" tires and all wheel drive can't get out that a passenger vehicle could?
Well, I've got a 99 Chevy Silverado with 4 wheel drive, and factory sized tires...BFG Radial All Terrain TA's...and I can easily drive it away from the side of the curb in 2 feet of snow. It's really not that difficult. Anyone that can't drive their truck out of a snow drift doesn't need to own a truck IMO.
A couple days ago I had to move my bucket truck and 22' car trailer so the plows could hit the street where it was at. There was probably close to 2 and a half feet of snow on the drivers side of it, because the plows had already pushed a bunch of snow to the side. I had to pull it forward and back it up a few times to pack down a little bit of a path to get a running start, but it pulled right on out of there within about 30 seconds of trying. And my bucket truck isn't 4 wheel drive either...plus it has duallies on the back which doesn't help in the snow...and I was pulling a 22' tandem axle car trailer. If I can pull that thing out of 2 and a half feet of snow that's been packed in by a plow...that Expedition damn well better be able to pull out of a little drift.
But...some people just don't know how to drive I guess. It amazes me that so many people have these big **** trucks and SUV's with 4 wheel drive and big **** tires and everything, yet they drive them like they're a Honda Civic...scared to take the thing over a pot hole, let alone taking it "off road" at all.
I have a couple theories.
1-If you can't pull your 4 wheel drive full size truck out of a 2 foot snow drift...you don't need a truck.
2-If you're scared of scratching your truck, you don't need a truck.
3-If you wash your truck once a week and are scared to take it down gravel roads for fear of getting it dirty and possibly getting a few paint chips...you don't need a truck.

Tires make a huge difference. I'd bet the city owned Expedition didn't have tires anywhere near as meaty as your BFGs.
It also depends greatly on the consistency of the snow. That heavy stuff that dumped on NYC is much harder to push through. For rig details, see my profile. Nothing here anymore... -

BFG All Terrain TA's aren't exactly what would be considered "meaty" tires. Slightly more rugged than an average passenger car tire, yes...but pretty standard fare on many SUV's and pickup trucks. To all practical purposes...the All Terrain TA's would really offer next to no advantage in the snow anyway. If you want to get technical, skinnier tires are actually going to perform better in the snow, because they can dig down to the pavement more easily, and compress the snow underneath them more thoroughly. The nirvana inducer-
