Blu-ray audio question

I was wondering how to get good quality two channel audio from a blu-ray disc just in case they begin to release music in this format. What would the quality be if I transferred the signal via HDMI to a reciever and then out via coax or toslink to an external DAC. Would the signal quality be any better than just going straight from blu-ray player to DAC via coax or toslink? Thanks.

In general - the fewer the cables and format conversions the better.

In the scenario you describe above you would have 1 hdmi from the player to your avr, an optical cable out from the avr to the external DAC, then another set of analog cables back into your avr and then speaker cables as the final step in the chain.

If you got a bd player with good DACs, then it would be one set of analog cables from your bd player and then speaker cables out from your avr.

Thanks for the quick reply. I was thinking of using the AVR only to receive the HDMI and then send the signal from DAC to designated power amps. Didn't know if the signal would be better out of the blu-ray player or the AVR or same.

I don't know about other players but I will never do audio over mine. There is a slight audible echo on SACD that drives me bonkers.

The best way to do it is using HDMI to your receiver. This will allow the DAC's in the receiver to do the conversion. You also limit the chance of interference.

I suggest looking close at your AVR and make sure it's up to your musical taste.

Another way to is get a really good Blu ray player like mine which is a Cambridge Audio Azur 650D. It's probably the best musical Blu ray player on the market. I liked it over the Oppo which is a strong 2nd.

Using analog out is ok if you have good quaity IC's, the amount of money you will pay for 3 pairs of High quality IC's , you can buy a very good quality Blu ray player. Mine lists for around 700.00

Well, I just use my PC, but have been planning on getting on of those HDMI decoders, Atlona?, so you can get the high-res layer to your DAC, not DSD though IIRC.

I think it basically does HDMI>bnc/coax RCA?

Of course, if you aren't using a standalone DAC and a compatible receiver, there you go.

I used to own a BDP-83 but never played around with it much, interesting comment here:
I have documented and reported a few times here on AC (in my Hirez music Circle and elsewhere) that Oppo support, among others, has admitted via email that the Oppo BDP-83 (as well as some earlier universals) output full 24/192 DVD-Audio (if present on disc, of course) via coax outputs...even though its somewhat against specs. The mediatek chip allows it. My Weiss DAC2 confirms it.
