The soundstage on this is damn impressive, as is the PQ. I saw this in 3D in the theater and will say the depth of field looks much better in 2D then it did in 3D.

The alternating AR was a distraction. When it changed it took me out of being immersed in the film. There's no benefit to doing this and hopefully this is not a continuing trend.

When it comes to a 3d movie they say that unless you shoot a whole movie in one take 3d is useless

Its the change from scene to scene that causes the eyes to get tired by having to lock the focus back in on a new image

I'm not a fan of current 3D technology. The only movie I saw in 3D was Avatar and there was too much color saturation and detail lost. When I watched the BR at home on my Panny Plasma, I was shocked at how much better it looked vs the 3D theater version. Besides, the 3D gave me a serious headache.

The alternating AR doesn't bother me one bit. It was no distraction on Dark Knight and wasn't on this one.
    No excuses!

Saw this finally today on bluray, 2D. The alternating AR didn't bother me at all, barely even noticed it. The audio, wow that was impressive. I think the sub was on damn near the whole time lol. Overall I liked the flick.
    I love animals, they're delicious!

Can someone explain what the term "alternating AR" means?
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Alternating aspect ratio. The aspect ratio changed between 16:9 (1.78:1) and IMAX (2.35:1) throughout the film for certain scenes. Dark Knight did the same. I did not find it distracting.

I'm in the camp that thinks the whole thing was too gimmicky. Alternating AR + alternating 3D was more distracting than worthwhile. The Daft Punk soundtrack wasn't bad, but having them in the movie just seemed contrived. And the CG on CLU (however you spell young Flynn's alter ego's name) was like Polar Express bad. But it got made on the strength of a demo reel of the lightcycle CG shown at comicon, so what can you expect.

Did you watch the movie in a legitimate IMAX theatre? There are so many faux-Imax theaters claiming to use actual Imax tech that it's hard to keep track.

IMO 3D has its uses and it should be relegated to Imax, where it can be implemented properly in accordance to the director's intention. However, Tron's 3D didn't contribute much to the plot, story or experience IMO.

Gotcha. Thanks. I can see it being distracting at home, but I saw this in IMAX so I barely noticed.

I didn't notice the aspect ratio thing... I just noticed the terrible CG and that Jeff Bridges played "the dude"

IS the aspect ratio like that on the BR? I hear about stuff like that being changed. Apparently, the latest Narnia movie was shot in 2.35:1 and cropped to 16:9 for BR, making all the shots look like closeups.

Actually, the IMAX screen is 1.70:1, not 2.35:1.

Also, TRON: Legacy was not shot in IMAX, none of it was. The 1.78:1 is just open matte footage.

Be careful with that. A lot of directors are not cropping their films, but like I stated above, are choosing to go with an open matte format. Doing this may look like cropping but in actuality your seeing more of the film, if it's open matte.

My mistake, thanks for the correction.

For those saying that CLU's CG face was horribly done. Are those from 2D viewing or 3D? I only have the 2D blu-ray version and did not notice anything off about it. I'll have to check it out again.

I watched it last night and had to turn my sub down from -3 db to -12 because there was so much bass! I liked it a lot and it definitely had kick **** sound and visuals.

Wow wow wow! I'm totally surprised at how good this movie is! The first 45 minutes were pretty intense, it calmed down a little bit after that but was still one of the best sci-fi movies in years. And BASS! Before this my best choice to demo my dual JL F113 set was War Of The Worlds. Now, fuhgedaboutit, the Bluray version of Tron Legacy is officially my King of BASS!!! Extremely tight, quick, heavy hitting BASS! I love it!!!

I used to demo WOTW at reference to impress people, though I couldn't watch the whole movie after the first time through. Yesterday I finally put on TL. I've got mixed feelings about the movie and the guy that played Sam, but at -15 I was flabbergasted at the sheer amount of LFE. I'm not sure if I can run this one at reference. The soundtrack is more than awesome and the movie will get at least a 2nd viewing (and I'll bump the volume safely) when I've got the house to myself.

    Combo rig:

I am with DMara on this one. I am old enough that I saw the original Tron in the theater when it released. I loved it and I think Legacy is a great follow up. I did not see Legacy in the theater but at home which may have some bearing on my opinion. As mentioned the sound track and visuals are amazing. This is my sub demo movie of choice now and your sub better be able bring it's A game! My SMS-1 was invaluable as the sub had to be turned down a couple of notches. I hope they follow up with another one!

Edit to add, at home I did not notice the AR changes but I can see how it would be distracting on a big screen.
