My personal listening tastes like the "tweeter" about 38/39" high. I find in my room it gives better imaging, soundstage, & overall coherence. Adding the DIY outriggers got me to exactly 39" & it sounds just perfect. Also the outriggers have definetely anchored the bass without a doubt.

I used 1/4x1 steel bar (4/12") & 8oz (3") plum bobs from Home Depot. I used the existing 1/4x20 threaded spike insert already in the base. Didn't take long to do the drilling, grinding, painting & the effort was well worth it. Just out of curiousity how high do you guys like you tweeters?

Looking good my man looking good. So when your done playing around with the Lsi15's , I want you to bring them down to the shop so we can run them against the Totems. I see a pair of Rainmakers or Sig 1's in your future with the badass Rotel amp you got( I kinda miss mine). Or is going floor standing then maybe a pair of Hawks will do.

I'd love to hear the 15's again , it's been a few years. I had the Lsi9's in the store.

Yo Dan, I just got them...I haven't even begun playing with them yet. But I must say they do get along very nicely with the Rotel RMB-1095.

Without a doubt the bass is tighter & more controlled. As with any speaker, coupling them to the floor with spikes does make an immediate improvement.

    Merry Christmas!!

Very nice. I'm looking to raise my own speakers but I'm working with tile and I don't think spikes would work.

    Good Stuff Phil. Very Classy!

I've never thought that much about the height of my tweeters though. Mostly because the main speakers have been either SDA/JBL/or Polk Monitor towers! But I do have some LSI-7s that I've been toying with lately--they're sitting on my JBLs (cerca mid-80s) and after reading this thread I realized that my tweeters are at least 45" above the floor? Don't know if that makes a difference. Up to now I haven't had time to hook them to the separates Pre-amp/amp so I've been running them off an HK stereo receiver. And that's OK but, they sound SHARP to me. I've heard all this praise about the Vifa...and have heard the Vifa in showrooms myself. But I never expected it to sound BRIGHT on an HK?? Even if that is not the ideal setup for them.

I also have a pair of Cambridge Audio Model Six (very cheap in comparison--the ones voiced by the late Henry Kloss?) hooked up to the same HK and on some things they actually sound more 'open' and have more synergy with the HK than the LSis....probably because the LSIs have more detail....and that comes across as 'edgy' on that system. I can tell that the LSIs image better and produce more of the top end. But the Cambridge A. Kloss Acoustic Suspension sound 'smoother' on that system. In fact. No speaker I own works as well on the HK as the Kloss speaker. Probably because it is a bit LESS detailed up top and crosses over to an 8" sealed woofer at 2K hz. There is less of the mid-bass bump that has been reported for the LSI-7s.

Of course...I'll be switching to my separates, soon. So that will probably open the LSIs up more and maybe tame some of that brightness because I heard the very same speaker on an all GamuT system in China and the highs were very nice indeed. But that was probably a 10,000+ dollar system!

    In any case.....looking good, Phil.

Here's one more pic for you that I forgot to include with my original post. I knew that after I added the outriggers on the 15's that moving them would be a nightmare to say the least with the speakers weighing about 70lb ea. & the spikes digging into the carpet. So I used those 2" furniture glides, I applied the adhesive pad & added a small nut (just big enough for the spike tip to nestle in for support). Quick & easy & the speakers slide like they were on ice!

We all know that speaker placement is critical & can take a lot of fine adjustments (1" can even be critical). These gliders made moving the speakers around a snap! Once in place simply tilt the speaker & slide them out. These would work great for any type pf speaker, even monitors on stands.

Great job Pearsall. I've had Myesound.com outriggers for years and like them more than just spikes in stock locations. It establishes a larger center(core) and base for the footprint of the speaker which I believe grounds it better and provides a stronger bass re-enforcement, with the added benefit of a midrange hump. This can also go negative depending on the loudspeaker and original freq response.

It's not a instant benefit for every speaker so keep that in mind as it may end up in a thin midrange and bloated bass.

As in any tweak, it;s just that...a tweak and depending on the listener, room and a host of other factors...may actually suck.

My experience with spikes is almost always positive and outriggers throw a wrench in that usual expectation due to the actual speaker. If you can do it on the cheap, as explained here, by all means do it and it looks super cool.

If you don't push the limits of your widgets, you're a loser. Get off your **** and play around, think out of the box, drink a lot of beer and Jaeger.....you never know what will end up working.

Nothing like a little fun project especially when it's friggin cold outside. Low cost with exceptional results. I always liked tinkering so this was right up my alley. Thanks. I'm still a bit leary of tackling any electrionic tweaks on my gear though. Not that I can't do it...I just can't afford to make a mistake that will cost $$$$.
