More often than not, these memorials have been funded by the soldiers and the families of soldiers who worked with (and depended on) these animals during the most difficult times of their lives. Tell them their money was wasted.

    Couldn't agree more.

Down in the capitol lawns of Phoenix they have a memorial for police K-9s that were killed on duty.

I think it's obvious that K-9s don't understand the significance of a memorial, but I think its intent is to remind us (people) of the significant impact they've done for our communities and our soldiers abroad.

Yea, we're in a recession, but I don't think recognition, remembrance, and education should be sacrificed.

    Just my opinion.

Gez Guys, maybe an example would be better. Lets just say you have a dog. One day, your house is on fire, the dog runs back into the house to drag out your kid. Maybe a few years later, the same dog saves the same kid from drowning in a lake. Move on a few more years, the same dog takes a bullet from a gang banger aiming at your kid. Now, when that dog dies, you want to tell me you wouldn't put something extra on his grave to recognize this stellar animal ?
A small memorial to the great achievements of man's best friend is very little to give in return for what they provide.....even if a few studies of the effects of cocaine on monkeys has to suffer.

BTW, Shack is smack dead on.

That scenario reminds me of the joke about the pig with a wooden leg!:biggrin::biggrin::biggrin::biggrin:

As usual, people's opinion on this matter are being twisted. According to the article there's a group lobbying for a national memorial.

If taxpayer money is going to be spent on this, it seems like a total waste. Is it a drop in the bucket? Yes, however its a completely silly argument to say that since government wastes unfathomable amounts of money it should be OK to waste even more of it on something like this. Using that as cover for every bit of government largess is the reason we have the problems we have. When we have our financial house in order we can build monuments to dust particles for all I care. Until then, you need to say no sometimes.

Being against tax dollars being spent on this doesn't mean you don't respect what these dogs have done. Most of us are dog owners and have been our whole lives.

If its privately funded, for the most part we don't get a say in it anyways, unless its going on public property. In the latter scenario, it would depend entirely on whether or not it was tasteful or a huge hunk of junk. Looking at many of the 'art' projects that the largest city in my state has approved in years past, I've been appalled more than a few times. Aside from that, build the largest, most extravagant war dog memorial you can dream up.

Ding Ding Ding !! Winner Winner Chicken Dinner !! If all the Fraud & Theft & Waste perpetrated by our local, state & Federal Governments were to be curtailed by 50%, there could be massive tax cuts for everyone (including the disadvantaged billionaires:eek:) and........increases in funding for all sorts of projects and programs. You ever wonder what might have been if Perot hadn't imploded ? I bet PORK & backroom deals would have been seriously endangered !!

God you guys go way overboard sometimes. It's just a stupid statue. Not wanting it doesn't mean you don't love dogs, or love cats, or you're a ****. It means that a piece of rock isn't particularly meaningful to you. There are a million ways to honor soldiers, and the animals. Disagreeing with the one that is a rock shaped like a dog doesn't make you a monster.
If you will it, dude, it is no dream.

Nor does thinking it is a fitting and reasonable tribute make one an anti homeless veteran or a proponent of a free spending big govt. It kinda works both ways.

    I've done my part...given some information...stated my position...and I'm out.

I love animals but I think this is a bit much. I understand if the families want to support this on there own dime but like others stated the Dogs don't know what it is and honestly there are better ways to memorialize them.

    Plus one for Steveinaz!!!!!!!!!!!!

    They don't need a memorial. I.M.O.

Oh, and stop trolling gdb. At least put some effort into posting something relevant to the topic next time.
