What do you mean "what's the skinny?" Subs that are passive, give you some flexability by adding a seperate amp. Subs with built in amps don't, unless you want to rip them apart. You can't add an amp to an already built in amp on a sub.

The DSW Pro 600 does not need an external amp or an external crossover so it will not benefit from another sub amp or crossover.

Some subs which are passive such as Hsu's cylinder subs need an external eq to produce a flat freq response. Other subs such as the SVS line and other passive subs may not external eq and you can interchange amps. It's usually not advisable to rip apart sub amps as they are usually designed to go well together, and more power may not necessarily help.
