Bi-wiring monitor 70 series 2 makes painful sound

I haven't upgraded my receiver yet so bi-amping is not an option...yet. Tried bi-wiring and noticed clarity of upper and lower tones...The sound seemed to open up and separation of instruments was better. I really can identify where the cymbals for example were coming from.

However, similar to the tsi300 when bi-wired, the soundstage got deeper which made it somewhat painful and fatiguing to listen to (the same experience with the boston acoustics 226, w/c i returned).

Do you have similar experience when bi-amping the monitor 70s?

Thanks.

You're not doing yourself, your 12yo JVC receiver or the speakers any good. You now have real speakers so you need real power to push them. The speakers are not your problem. They will sing with better amplification.

Bi-wiring is useless, unless you have separate amps which allows you to bi-amp, don't bother as you will cause your self more headaches than anything else. Simply use the speakers with the short on providing them with a single cable from a single O/P until you feel the nedd to upgrade your amplification.

    Cheers!

As has been pointed out, bi-wiring simply moves the jumper from the speaker to the amp.

    For most of us, yes.

Thanks for the suggestions..I guess I'll just have to wait a little while and save my pennies to get an avr with pre-outs and external amps.

About the deeper soundstage, yeah that is what I experienced, I really would have liked it that way but I could not stand the pressure even if the sound was cleaner..dunno maybe it's my old receiver.

What you are expressing makes no sense. A deeper sound stage cannot result in pain and fatigue nor will it result in pressure.

I want to say your hearing distortion, put the jumpers back on the speaker and just use one set of cables. Of coarse I'm assumeing you removed the jumpers to begin with when you bi-wired.

Yes, I removed the jumpers. This is the same experience I had with the tsi 300s, sound was noticeably clearer and deeper but fatiguing. Even my wife had the same experience. I want back to single connection and the sound is smooth again.

Your results are weird but at least for you it shows that biwiring does make a difference.

without adding your own crossover to bi-wiring, how can it have any effect?

What bi-wiring does in effect is to get rid of the lousy jumpers that come with speakers. However, one can simply replace the stock jumpers with high quality wire and get the same benefit.

Agreed, the only insignificant effect bi-wiring may have is longer distance for unwanted return effect from one driver to the other but for most in-home use people use pretty short cables anyway.

That assumes that the new speaker cables are of higher quality than the jumpers (which gets us into the debate of being able to hear differences in speaker cables - and a discussion I do not want to go to )

Funny you mentioned about types of wires...i am not going to claim that i am an expert or even close to being average but i have had experience with quality headphones and i can perceive the difference in sound quality.

i originally tried the cheapest monster cable against a radio shack 14 gauge and i did find the two sound different. the monster sounded cooler and the radioshack sounded warmer...coupled with my old receiver, i liked the radio shack's better. i can't justify better cables right now so i'm settling with these cheap cables for now.
